✶PUB ePUB 4: Session 3 w/ Clara Balaguer: Publishing as bloodletting ✶ 4th of June – Time 16:30 ✶ Online lecture + Experiment ✶
Migratory Choreography for a Conversation (Take 2)
or Second Attempt at a Bleeding Edge Choreography for a Conversation
or Radio TV Chat Migration (Take 2) - A play by Clara Balaguer and friends
Supported by the GRA Bookbinding Workshop ✶ – You Need: Internet ✶  The workshop is open to 20 participants, please fill ✍️THIS FORM ✍️with your name, mail, and address *
* Reading Material will be sent beforehand via email. As a second part of the workshop, and kindly supported by the Book Binding workshop we would facilitate a new technique and supplies to print and bind them to make them a printed section of your personal library and archive.
Another edition of Publishing as Bloodletting, a two-fold essay and play about the politics of circulation in the body public, written from the perspective of a migrant publisher. As this publication oscillates between the visible (text) and the audible (voice), so must the conversation around it also be structured. The play has been performed in multiple iterations: as a monologue, with volunteer readers, with the original cast of friends, and most recently, in radio TV format. This bleeding edge issue is the second attempt to perform a lecture choreography that experiments with non-simultaneity of sight and sound in public speaking. The conversation about the essay-play will attempt to move, literally at times, through what has been read, what is being seen, and what can't be heard. The first rehearsal was not entirely successful due to Nazi zoombombers, unfamiliar broadcast software, and mild exhaustion of the lecturer.

About Pub ePub #4 Quarantine sessions : Mediums as thresholds for social distancing ✶
"Oh, Kitty! how nice it would be if we could only get through into Looking-glass House! I'm sure it's got, oh! such beautiful things in it! Let's pretend there's a way of getting through into it, somehow, Kitty. Let's pretend the glass has got all soft like gauze, so that we can get through. Why, it's turning into a sort of mist now, I declare! It'll be easy enough to get through — ' She was up on the chimney-piece while she said this, though she hardly knew how she had got there. And certainly the glass was beginning to melt away, just like a bright silvery mist "

PUB and the GRA Bookbinding workshop are hosting a new series of online workshops and talks dedicated to everyone interested in experimental publishing as a way to communicate and share during times of isolation.  A delocalized printing and binding network has been created and will be nurtured, informed, shrinked and expanded through the different sessions. We think we can question our ways of production while we are separated, and we are willing to share ways of doing that can make us feel each other, beyond the screen, or melting its surface, just like a bright, silvery mist.

For the fourth edition of PUB ePUB, we will explore the publishing medium as a threshold between worlds ✩ We understand publishing as a door or physical encounter with new realities, knowledge, and concepts that come into a frame to develop new ways of community-making. We are interested in highlighting the concept of transmission and borderline to formulate the idea of publishing mediums as liminal devices that facilitate transference to the otherness.

In PUB we are interested in possibilities of publishing as a mediator for new discourses, as a way of resistance and also as an artistic practice,  ✩ This workshop will be developed in different online sessions by local and international guests  from different fields whose body of work explores empirical ways of publishing, new narratives, content development and relevant artistic practices for the field, always focusing in delocalizing production and possibilities to produce during social distancing times.

Thoughts of the day, carrying over from yesterday's audio notes: SPINELESS PUBLICATIONS.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In order to free the archive or library or publication (conceived often, in this place, as an archival labor) from its restrictive bodily limitations, one must understand the limbs, organs, system, or senses that make up its entirety. And understand what happens when one limb or organ or system or sense disappears. The other(s) work(s) harder. When the book has no spine, there is increased mobility in the innards, the guts work harder. When the system has no mandatory command flow, no closed menu options except for an initial suggestion of navigation, a map of cardinal points that may be ignored... how do the other systems work harder/better? Because they must, and they do. What other senses/systems/limbs are discovered when a supposedly fundamental body part is lost?

The parts of the body public I am considering: The face (cara, cover). Circulation. Guts. Spine. Foot(notes, -ers, pie de página).
There are others, but for now these are the parts I have been considering. It's maybe been a year or two. Perhaps longer if you count the time I was thinking just about circulation, in humourous and architectural and urbanist terms. And I'm not entirely sure if it's "correct" to fleshify this question. Flesh is, nonetheless, my response to this haptic crisis.

The parts of the body public I am considering: The face (la cara, cover). Circulation. Guts. Spine. Foot(notes, -ers).
There are others, but for now these are the parts I have been considering. It's maybe been a year or two. Perhaps longer if you count the time I was thinking just about circulation, in humourous and architectural and urbane terms. And I'm not entirely sure if it's "correct" to fleshify this question. Flesh is, nonetheless, my response to this haptic crisis.

To be unbound, spineless. The index or the table of contents is merely an initial formation, a suggested navigation. It is not a prescriptive order with a punitive end. "You must, or else." The order is left in the hands of the reader or visitor or owner. Mess, restructuring, disrespect to the initial intention. How can the author, collator, orderer let go of the need to insist upon an order, despite offering it for those who need initial points for triangulation? The writer must conceive of a textual object without a spine.

To be the spine is to fulfill secretarial functions. To connect and hold. To be small articles, pronouns and connectors in a sentence clause (the a and but I you etc), often endlessly. The nouns and the verbs, they are the large bones that get credit for work (or enjoy leisure of play) that without vertebrae would be impossible. To file, to send messages to all those involved, to collate information in a single place. To do the diligence that is so often framed as menial. How to be of spinal value and come to terms (or not) with invisibility, with dwelling in the substrate, beneath the membrane. How to make peace with the responsibility of the spinal function, that of holding limbs and organs, that of being supple, that of holding the head that droops. If the head initiates, the spine doesn't just hold, it coordinates and organizes. The spine is an administrative function. The spine is the secretary, sending information throughout the body. If the secretary is severed, unassisted mobility is impossible, the mind is trapped within a body that doesn't listen. Liberated as well, but only if an extra-spinal system of mobility is afforded.

Mission for the day night tomorrow if possible: Reprint 5 copies of the reader and redistribute them to 5 neighbors. Recirculate.

Headphones. Headphones.

Hi Jessica.

social practice + experimental publishing based in Rotterdam
in connection with the filipino diaspora - hardworking goodlooking (misspelled on purpose)
forms of archival research
wanted to learn more on vernacular identity of Philippines, but did not find the books
began publishing their own content

'collective authorship' is what I'm working on now
long distance + removed from context & landscape where she was doing publishing
position of recent migrant
'I'm no longer local/localized in Philippines'
shift the dinamycs of the collectivity, depending where components of the collective are situated..

'Publishing as bloodletting'
how book object reflects parts of a (human? animal?) body
the body public, published body
circulation between body-book parts. as ideas circulate in collectives
what happens when these ideas are synthetized in 'quote/unquote' academic format
how to pay hommage to all people that participate in conversation
how to redistribute abundance

yourself as teacher/professor apply this thinking?
surprised I'm qualified to teach... no academic training/degrees, self-educated
interesting to be inside these circles of value
thinking in redistribution of capital/access, how to identify materials that can exit/be mobile

piercing the membrane of the institution
in position of extreme privilege, have a paycheck
you get desensitized about the privilege you have, because you become used to it
important to keep connections to other places
manage the privilege you have as a way to undermine it

Overseas Foreign Workers, 11% of the Philippines, OFW
in saudi arabia, europe, etc. set in a situation of burocracy+banking quite complex..
wiring money back home through alternative banking structure
this accounts for 9.3% of the GDP of the Philippines

the one that can get the visa becomes the vessel of abundance that can flow back to the family.. some sort of kinship responsibility

kinship, balangay, a boat with which you traveled precolonially with your kinship cell
not necessarily all blood family
now translated to barangay, borough
neighbors as kin

collective authorship.. how does work when physical proximity is not possible?
before I was working in Manila, born and raised, struggling with forms of access
this gives more security to speak alone
in the Netherlands I'm visible and more accessible, shifting in level of comfort in speaking alone
I'm closer to the microphone, have to adjust my volume
different form of presenting, writing, publishing, circulating it
tactic of transcription, of conversations with other collaborators, using those voices in my writing and make specific that they belong to others

different roles
visibility & audibility: you can turn individual voices into a collective voice without flattening them
veil identities if necessary
record individual voices, read them back to a group, and understanding it as collective writing.
collective dictation, automatic dictation
removes many difficulties of collective writing (the ego)
.. transcription seems a less violent method

informal engagment now
networks of trusts and of friendship
exchanges of generosity and solidarity
non-friend based networks is case to case ( maybe they become friendships in the process :) )

signing with pseudonym, anonymous authorship
pain that comes from collective authorship for people of colour, you're invisible/not aknowlegded
unless that there could repercussion to your writing

solution is not always the collective names. can also become a way to avoid accountability..
case-to-case solutions, what does signature mean in this particular case?

Can you explain the way you try to make students in PZI manage to deal with collective reading? Abundance of readings?
students had to digest large collection of materials coming from context of Philippines, students were not familiar
started wtih matters of adjacency
always presented texts in pairs
non-linear ways of reading 2 texts in relation to each other
you need to skim through things, circuling around it on the surface
afterwards we split up publications in packages, 30 publications for each students
they were responsable for digesting this and relaying the information back to the group
-> happened also in academic studies, students invented the system themselves
sami says: deprivatizing intellectual labour
how do we work together and manage production flows
how to do things is not seeing as plastic, in the same way as the circulation of a publication..
looks great but how does it circulate? :)

specific ways of circulating materials that are not just about openness and maximum circulation?
how can that be shown?
favour certain paths of circulation instead of others, can the paths have wider meaning without referring to the content?
archive that students of REDACTED worked on and could not be spoken about
how could we talk about something that had happened without actually talking about it, because content is confidential
playing on idea of 'rumour', our connection to the archive could not be made public for a reason
adding value to content by talking about the process rather than the object, the relationships around it
the negative space around the object is circulating

https://displaydistribute.tumblr.com/
https://displaydistribute.com/haukun/
collective from Hongkong - display distribute - they distribute publications through system of light logistics, some sort of 'mule service'
you can become a courrier, you can offer stuicase space when you're traveling, or you can ask for suitcase space
you hand the package in person
if you sign up you get 12% discount
cfr Kate Rich's project https://feraltrade.org/cgi-bin/courier/courier.pl
'a content is conflated with its means of circulation'
not sure what it meant in real life, took 3ys to fully understand the sentence and begin writing about about it
it can be most interesting part of the content
forms of exchange/travel of small publications in local cultural contexts becomes just as interesting as the content itself
Kristian says: ex zine-fair in Philippines island, zines in the form of stickers, that is what they could afford to print
possibilities of circulation affect the publication

Jessica - Girls like Us
https://www.girlslikeusmagazine.com/
content as distribution, something they're struggling with a lot
break after last issue, rethink why print/distribute... trying to make it more sustainable

let go of profit, to keep it alive is something extra
side hustle makes main hustle possible
we may give up tomorrow... becomes easier, more room to experiment
there are limits, learning curve of where the limits are established
there is other returns, they come later through other possibilities, a way of surviving

'publishing is planting coconut more than bananas', a tree needs 6-10 ys before giving coconuts, depending on whether u planting hybrid or non hybrid coconut, unlike bananas' 6-8 months
what works and what not? art book fairs? same people attend, who can access...

Clara: format was always dictated by context, local crafts men with specific expertise, let's work with that
stuff that was not in codex form book format was more difficult to sell
went to 1 bookfair all the time, the most capitalistic, was a necessity and choice of moving the books
through the books finding homes, we found community of peers

downloading pdfs/digital publications, but where do you meet your peers?
