## First meeting on the 3rd of December
- what is the / is there already a question to answer?
- what would be the medium, writing?
- Together, we want to put to work our ima-
- gination by mobilizing SF (science fiction,
- speculative fiction, speculative fabulation) to
- depart from mainstream stories that fail to
- imagine deep change3.

## Possible methods for first approach
### welcome + introduction ~ 15min
### Question and appreciative inquiry ~ 15min
### Time travel - self travel guided meditation ~ 15min
### Causal layered analysis (CLA) Iceberg + Scanning and forecasting → scenario/world building
Possible questions:
- Crisis of imagination and crisis of the narration. How can we evade resignation?
- Can we submit with the crisis of the imagination?
- Can we submit with the crisis of the imagination?
- What is the resilience we advocate
Creative resilience?
CLA - Uncovering Causality - 40min (~ 10min per layer)
What is on the way of imagination to create deep changes, what stop us to evade resignation?
- identify litany (the issues)
- what is happening today that is standing in the way of imagination? Pick one issue that renonates the most for the group
- how is the issue described in public - trend, problems, words on the street, stories, events in media etc (exemple time→ high level of burnout)
- analyse the causes - what factors are infleuncing the issue? how are they related?
- social causes
- technological causes
- economical causes
- environemental causes
- political causes
- explore the woldview - what values or ideologies underlies the issue? - Focus on cultural value, languag, beliefs or mindset that perpetuate the issue (examples: efficiency, economic gain, time is money)
- Unveil the emotional dimension (myth, methatphors) - what images or archetypes arise?
- what gut feeling, emotional responses or bodily sensations crop us (frustration exhaustion, greyness, incessant noise)
- what value images, sounds, scents, or multi-sensory impressions emerge? (slave ship)
- Are there any myth, symbols, collective architypes or folk stories that come to mind? (american dream etc)
~ 5min break
CLA - Discovering alternative scenarios - 20min (~ 5min per layer)
How could imagination help evade resignation?
- What could be new or different images, myth or methaphors? What could entice alternative emotional responses and give rise to different values? (swimming; floating in water, freedom)
- what woldviews do these images encourage? what beliefs would be strongly held? what would be miost valued? (wellbeeing, freedom, responsivity...)
- which systems and social structures would be shaped by this worlview?
- social causes
- technological causes
- economical causes
- environemental causes
- political causes
- What fact would be reported in the news? what would be the headlines in a major newspaper, the breaking news? ("O' clock terrorist strike again", "new marital vows include a new no time pressure clause"...)
### world building in 15min?
~ 10min break
### wrap up and explaine world prototyping 10min

### What don't you know yet 10min + automatic writing 10 min →→ 20-30 min
----------- end ---------------------
### grow, collapse, discipline, transform → in time travel ?
- what kind of transformation you are hopping to see ?
One of the better known (and simple to explain) methods uses four “Archetypal Futures” designed by Jim Dator at the University of Hawaii. The idea behind this method is that almost all of our images of the future tend to fall into one of four archetypal categories: Continue, Collapse, Discipline and Transform. To design a Continue scenario, we ask “What are the ways in which the current situation could continue as it is?” Say that the economy can continue to grow. Collapse explores the question “what are the ways in which the world as we know it could fall apart?” We are already seeing what happens when the growth economy reaches its limits and leads to economic and political crises. Collapse looks at what would happen when this scenario is taken to its extremes. In Discipline we look at different ways in which the situation could be directed by imposed rules or enforced self-discipline. Say if we know that growth economy can’t continue, how could we curb it through regulation towards a steady-state economy? Finally, the Transform scenario asks “What are the ways in which our situation could change altogether?” What would be a radically different type of economy that would, for example, be inclusive, based on principles of abundance and generosity for all including all beings on the planet and beyond?
These are of course extremes, or caricatures of possible futures. However, it helps to exaggerate in this stage, in order to illustrate that radically different answers can be given to the question you started with. This scenario method works well to test your understanding of a situation you’re faced with and to challenge the boundaries of your own expectations, without falling into the simple dichotomy of utopia and dystopia. Plausible futures usually happen somewhere in between, by incorporating elements of all scenarios. To map out the plausibility of the scenarios, the scenario method called the Futures Cone can be useful. The Cone fans out the further away from the present, making it possible to visualise the spectrum between the plausible and improbable aspects of a scenario.
Mental time travel without a world. Daily rituals, daily life details.
================ mental time travel=============================
- (WORK SUMMARY; TO BE REMOVED)
- four archetypal futures
- Crisis of imagination
- has grown (more of a crisis, more of imagination)
- has collapsed (the crisis has collapsed, so has everything else)
- has been diciplined (the crisis was diciplined and re-routed)
- has tranformed (merging, co-authoring, --- the transformations we wrote about)
Take a few deep breaths.
See in front of you the oldest person you currently know. As you breathe in and out you imagine that you have traveled into the world where you would have reached their age.
Then try to think of the yongest person you currently know.
With the next breath you are in a world where they have reached this same old age as the oldest person you know. You glance around in this world for a little second, but we don't stop there for long. With each breath you travel another year into the future. One year for every breath. In and out, in and out, further and further into the future. One more. And another.
I invite you to make yourself comfortable: sit, lounge, lie down, - whatever feels right to be doing this morning in this room.
We’ll have a short 'closed eye visioning' session, a kind of mental time travel guided by a series of questions, where you’ll travel to different possible futures in your mind’s eye.
We won’t push to share what you saw later, so just relax and see what emerges - it doesn’t matter how incoherent, nonsensical or even embarrassing things you might encounter. They’ll be just passing thoughts. They don’t reflect on 'you' or your personality. Just observe them come and go as reactions to my questions.
Take a few deep breaths. With each breath you travel a year into the future. In and out, we are now 5 years from now ... in and out,
further and further into the future. We are now about 15 years from now. We go a bit more, some few more breaths, maybe 20, 25 years from now. In and out. And when you’re ready, open your mind’s eye and land... you are in a world where every crisis of imaginiantion continued to grow as it does today. Everything continued to grow. There is more of a crisis, but also more imagination. There is more money, more waste, more work, more pleasure, more proposed solutions by authoroties, more multinational companie… Imagine waking up in this world. What do you do first? What wakes you up in the morning? You start your morning ritual, in this world of growth. Do you feel hungry? Look around the place you woke up. What do you see around you? Who is around you and how are they behaving? How have you been growing yourself in this world?
****
With your next breath, let go of the Crisis Grow world. Let it dissolve into the background. Just focus on your breath. In and out… in and out… With the next breath another world comes into view. A world of Crisis Collapse. The crisis of imagination has collapsed, but so has everything else. The economy collapsed, social structures collapsed, the climate is spinning out of control as all tender balances collapsed, the environment suffering a rapid mass extinction. You just woke up from taking a nap in this world. Where are you? What do your clothes look like? You get up. Are you waking up where you live? You try to get in touch with a person dear to you. How do you communicate in this world? What does technology look like?
****
Then, when you are ready, let go of this world. Focus on your breathing and let each breath take you away from Crisis Collapse… And then breathe in and while exhaling open the gates of a Crisis Disciplined world. Here we imposed rules and regulations to cap unlimited, unhealthy growth. Some of us are disciplined and have transformed our lives to become more sustainable. Others have rules imposed on them, through an intricate system of monitoring and consequences. Which type of person are you? Disciplined or in need of disciplining? Or are you the person doing the disciplining, devising and implementing the rules? What does your work look like in this world? How do you live? Do you travel? And if you do, how do you do that?
****
We’re about to leave the Disciplined world, so take a deep breath and one last big push towards a Crisis Transformed world. A world where everything is different from your life today. Nothing is the same. What does that look like where the crisis has transformed completely? What does it feel like? Go outside, what can you smell, taste, hear, touch? Someone is passing in the street, what do they look like, what are they doing? Now look at yourself? What do you look like and how do people look to you? Where do you live? What do you do in your life in a transformed world? What do you care about? Who do you care for?
****
And finally, take one deep breath and close the portal to Crisis Transform. Focus on breathing and with every breath travel one year backward. Take your time.
Focus on breathing and with every
breath travel one year backward. Take as long as you need to come back to the present... And when
you arrive, slowly open your eyes, stretch out and make sure that all your bits have returned safely
to the here and now. Welcome back.
You find the time the youngest person you currently know is as old as the oldest person you know. You find yourself as old as the oldest person you know. You are approaching the present… And when you arrive, slowly open your eyes, stretch out and make sure that all your bits have returned safely to the here and now. Welcome back.
(END)
- Health crisis, economic crises. Social crises, political crises... Identity crises, the crisis of confidence. Climate Crisis, the crisis of the living. The time is rife with crises and it doesn't seem to be getting any better...
- Faced with these crises, present and future, the future arouses more fears than hopes, and many of us feel a strong sense of helplessness. Of course, attempts to face these crises and to shape the future exist. Public authorities, large and not so large companies: many are those who propose solutions. But, too often, their answers do not stray from the beaten track and continue to follow narratives that are far from proven - free market, growth, human exceptionalism and the like. And many of them do not seem to appreciate the seriousness of the issues at stake. In short, at this rate, everything seems to be leading us to disaster.
- We believe that the crises we are experiencing and those that lie ahead are coupled with another crisis. This crisis is one of imagination.
- But not just any imagination: the imagination that we lack, that we feel deprived of, or that we have difficulty cultivating is an imagination of the future. An imagination that would make the future possible, that would get us out of the catastrophe as an inescapable destiny. An imagination of the future, oriented towards action, which would leave room for some hope and joy, which would thwart the pangs of impotence and stupefaction. A plural imagination, distributed, far from hegemonic discourses and dominant narratives. A radical imagination, also, capable of leading elsewhere, not a power of innovation destined to keep everything the same.
- A responsible imagination, however, attentive and concerned with the consequences.
## intro with maya
Make yourself comfortable: lie down or sit comfortably. Assume a position that will allow your
body to be at rest while you’re off travelling to different possible futures, in your mind’s eye. It is a
kind of mental time travel guided by a series of questions. I’ll invite you to observe what bubbles up
in your thoughts, emotions and bodily sensations in response to these questions. We won’t share
what you saw, so just relax and see what emerges - it doesn’t matter how incoherent, nonsensical or
even embarrassing things you might encounter. They’ll be just passing thoughts. They don’t reflect
on 'you' or your personality. Just observe them come and go as reactions to my questions. Enjoy!
Take a few deep breaths. With each breath you travel a year into the future. In and out, in and out,
further and further into the future. When you’re ready, open your mind’s eye... you’re in lalaland.
In a resort of radical fairies. In a new age world filled with profitable feminine values. The world of
the triple bottom line and compassionate capitalism. Where you can do well by doing good. The
friendly universe provides. We have found ways to collaborate with Gaia, the mother goddess of the
planet. Where we breathe clean air and eat life-giving foods. Where we heal ourselves and heal the
Earth of the toxic fear and pride. Imagine waking up in this world. Look around. What does your
bedroom look like? What do you see outside? Imagine getting up and getting ready for the day.
What does your morning ritual look like? What do you have for breakfast? Who is around you?
Who do you collaborate with? What are you doing?
With your next breath, let go of Lalaland. Let it dissolve into the background. Just focus on your
breath. In and out... in and out... With the next breath another world comes into view. You sailed
into pirate bay. The federated anarcho-capitalist republic. You can feel the buzz of innovation
crackling in the air. The taste of freedom and infinite possibilities. New forms of sociality emerging
from human-computer interactions. In co-working spaces, in hackathons and augmented reality
meetups. Through blockchain co-operatives. You are in a hyperconnected megacity, surrounded by
rewilded landscapes tended to by environmental AI. Machine wilderness. On the horizon, the first
exobiology expedition to Mars takes off in a generational space ship. Where are you in this world?
What does your life look like? Where do you live? What technologies are you using? How do you
communicate in this world? What do you do? How do you collaborate? And then, when you are ready, let go of this world. Focus on your breathing and let each breath take
you away from the Pirate Bay... And then breathe in and open the gates to a different future. Above
the gates the world welcomes you with their motto. We have it harder. We imposed hierarchies,
rules and regulations to cap unlimited growth. There is growth, for sure, but only for those of us
who can handle it. We get rich while becoming more sustainable. We meet in exclusive clubs and
share the wealth of knowledge and resources amongst our brethren. We create rules for others to
follow. We impose the rules through an intricate system of surveillance and harsh consequences. We
keep the world in check through competition. Yet it isn’t easy. We cannot get rid of an annoying
itch. The collaborative underground that keeps exciting the masses with possibilities of social
change... Imagine your life in this world. What kind of person are you? Are you a member of a club,
or the underground? Or both? Are you devising and implementing the rules, or breaking them?
How do you live? Where do you live? What does your work look like in this world? How do you
collaborate and how do you compete? How could you thrive in this world?
We’re about to leave all those who think they Have it Harder... so take a deep breath and one last
big push towards the Care Core. A world where many things are is different from the world in
which you live today. A world where feminine values and federated media transformed society into
a place that is open and participatory. Where rhysomatic governance has superseded rigid
hierarchies and ineffective horizontal structures. The strength of our society comes acknowledging
interdependence, between everything and everything else. We thrive in multispecies kinship
networks that organically grow and dissolve, evolving through collaboration. We understand that we
are hydrogen ripped from its context, mixed with the dust of dead stars. That we are endlessly
recycled water and crystalising cyclones. That we are teeming civilisational hosts. Most
importantly, that we are capable of care. To care for humans and to care for the earth. To care for the
earth without humans and for humans without the earth. We know that There’s work to do. Star-
work, but earthbound all the same.” What does Care Core look like? What does it feel like? What
can you smell, taste, hear, touch? Look at yourself? What do you look like? Where do you live?
What do you do as a member of Care Core? What do you care about? Who do you care for?
Finally, take one deep breath and close the portal to Care Core. Focus on breathing and with every
breath travel one year backward. Take as long as you need to come back to the present... And when
you arrive, slowly open your eyes, stretch out and make sure that all your bits have returned safely
to the here and now. Welcome back.
## in confinement
A quoi ressemble votre vie ?
And let your breathing take you away from this apartment, and from this day. Breathe in, and out… And let the next breath open the door to a new place, in another apartment, on another day. Outside rain drizzles down, there are less bird-sounds on a grey day like this. Inside, you open the door to your bedroom. Your partner is nervously preparing the oversized bed for an important video-conference and throws a tense look at you. You open the wardrobe, stuffed with bathrobes instead of pants, shirts and dresses, and you quickly pick the bathrobe that you will wear today. But you’re too slow, because your partner really gets annoyed now and snaps at you. That meeting is about to start! You are chased out of the bedroom.
Only now you see that the bathrobe you picked, is full of coffee-stains from an accident yesterday. Impossible to disturb your partner’s meeting, so you will have to do groceries like that. And as you move through your apartment, you try to remember what it was like in the old days, when bathrobes weren’t obligatory outside the house yet.
You walk into the living room. Today it’s your turn to do home-schooling, but you also promised the yuca-plant in the living room to spend some quality-time together, and in two hours time, you have a deadline for work. You turn on the radio, because on the Federal Children’s Channel, the daily obligatory Forgiveness-Meditation has already started. The voice of the Federal Schoolteacher guides the kids to meditate on Unconditional Love and Forgiveness, but it’s clear that your kids can’t concentrate today. Instead, they insist on fiddling with the plants in the kitchen. You have already explained a million times, as empathically as possible, that it’s not allowed to tear out leafs, because it kills the plants. You try to make them concentrate on the meditation. Because if they miss 2 of these daily meditations, they will get reprimanded, and their empathy-score will go down on the internet. In the corner of your eye you can see that your Yuca-plant is sulking because you’re not giving it attention. You will have to take some time to excuse for your neglect later.
Try to imagine yourself leading this life, in this world. What does the rest of your day look like? Who else is in your apartment? What do you see when you straighten your bathrobe, and walk out of your apartment? What job is it exactly that you do? Do you have any rituals before going to bed at night?
(pause)
Try to concentrate on your breathing again. And with your next inhalation, leave this place... Let it slowly dissolve, and just focus on your breathing...
And with the next breathe, the hospital is gone. And when you breathe in again, you find yourself in your car. Or it’s a van actually, a high-tec van. Ass you open the door of your van, and step out into the street, you feel invincible. The kids passing by (wearing their bathrobes, face-shields and face-masks like everyone else), look up at you in absolute admiration. You are in full-protective suit, head to toe. It’s warm alright, but all the air you breathe is triple filtered, and you feel good in there, safe. This suit is the cherry on the pie of your rich, altruist career. Years ago you sacrificed your personal life to get your first elite-job, and started working as a warehouse stacker. Soon after, you were head-hunted by the Federal Monopoly Consortium (that’s the union of the companies previously known as Amazon, Apple and Facebook) and became a supermarket employee. You took so much pride in the Consortium’score-value of Altruism & Empathy, that you got promoted to the technical cable-crew. And today you are proud to risk your life to repair people’s cables and internet-connections. Because their life depends on it. These cables are what connects people across the globe, and they are the only means for the obligatory contact-tracing cameras to transmit their data. Your job is a crucial one.
You work hard but you are considered to be a hero – and you get paid like one. The whole of next year you will go on a holiday. You will actually travel, and go to another continent for a year. This exercise in empathy is something that only the super-rich can afford. But you deserved it, and the Consortium supports you.
Imagine yourself in this life… What continent will you choose for your travels? Where will you get the best lesson in empathy? What is it like to take off your protective suit in the evening? Do you feel special because you don’t do any tele-work? Do you live alone? And what does your apartment look like?
Finally, take one deep breath and close the portal to this life. Focus on breathing and with every breath travel one year backward. Take as long as you need to come back to the present... And when you arrive, slowly open your eyes, stretch out and make sure that all your bits have returned safely to the here and now. Welcome back.

On a remoted plannet, humans managed to learn the language of the bears. On that plannet humans and bears talk to each other with words, share scientific researches, develop theories, philosphical discourses and culture based on language together. Bears experience life in a nonlinear way, through using language. Every word they use shifts them to another time zone, in a non chronoligcal way. it makes their lives special and satisfying, jumping from age to age, from adulthood to childhood and back... but it also consumes a lot of their power and makes their body decay relatively fast, till death. Humans on that plannet always wanted to be able to do the same. What those humans dont realise, is that this capacity to jump into different time zones will bring to the extinction of the bears. As life is so fulfiling in a nonlinear experience of time, the urgency to procreate disappears and the bears do not produce new generations anymore. Humans on earth know that. in fact, humans on earth knew the language path to nonlinear experience of time thousands of years ago. But as they evolved, they understood that this paradise way of living is also the one that will make them disappear as a species and they tought themselves to unlearn this language. For many years after they could only experience time in a linear way and this was less exciting, but at the same time they are back to procreation and there is no threat on there existence . Sadly, the humans on that other planet dont know this history. If they will not unlearn the language of nonlinearity, they might have a great life, but with no followers....
(there are more important details to this story, but this is the summary...)

Welcome back. Re bonjour.
##ENGLISH VERSION
Make yourselves comfortable. Find a position that allows your body to be at rest while you travel into different possible futures, through your imagination, through your mind’s eye. Maybe you need to loosen your pants. Maybe you need to get a blanket, a candle or a hat. Take a moment to settle in properly... and relax.
We are going to leave on a kind of time travel, guided by a series of questions... I will invite you to observe what erupts in your thoughts, emotions and physical sensations, in response to my questions.
Thrill, fear, desire...
Are you ready?
Before we start I will recite a protective formula, guaranteeing a good return. It is very old and hard to pronounce, sorry for our ancestors. I ask you to close your eyes and open your ears. And to open your ears, please push an index finger into each one and pull it out briskly, like a champagne cork from a bottle on a festive night.
no Kiklopas sapņošanas acs līdz miesas samtainumam, The beautiful and atgriezīsies ar lidojošu paklāju.
From the cyclopean eye of reverie to the velvety flesh, the beautiful and the lovely will return on a flying carpet.
We will drift away now… Have a good trip.
Take a deep breath, a big breath of air. With each inhalation you will travel one year into the future. 2026, 2032... The scenery blurs around you, 2037..., 2060... the places you know change and disappear. Think of all beings who have lived before you and whose joys and sorrows have come to you. And then think of those who will come, who will outlive you and who will carry the trace of our sorrows and joys. And then disperse your thoughts by breathing in and out gently.
Breathe in, breathe out... further and further into the future. And when you are ready, slowly open your mind’s eye: we are in 2111.1
You are in a cyclopean swamp, you have set your Orange-Boom-Partout-Pass-Extra-Large in chromatic mode, so you see in dominant orange. In the middle of centenary trees with slow growth, very small, fine: white birches banzai with trembling foliage, umbrella pines with arthritic branches like small Japanese grannies long since centenary.
You have one foot shoed, and one foot bare... and you follow Sabine right into the swamp, your feet sinking into thick, chubby, bouncy moss that is sometimes extremely soft and comforting and sometimes wet, cold and even greedy, voracious, sucking at your feet like a hungry ghoul.
The Kemeri Marsh has two faces: one is soft and welcoming like Sabine, the other one murky and mischievous like the small waters of the marsh. Take a moment to feel this mixture of joy and danger. Imagine the great joys that come to the swamp but also the secret woes, hidden beneath your feet that follow Sabine.
We won't share what you see so just relax and see what emerges. It doesn't matter if it's incoherent, nonsensical or even if you encounter embarrassing situations. It's just thoughts passing by. A draft that flows between us. They don't reflect your personality, so just watch them come and go as I keep on asking questions.
Who are you in 2011.1? In this semi-lake world, nibbled by a vegetation in full form? What did you come to look for in this swamp with this big know-it-all with mini fangs?
For a way to exchange, to do genetic trading of chromosomes with the carnivorous plants that Sabine knows well, maybe? The bones of pre-hanseatic humans like the mythical Gargouillasmina Michel's broken arms bone, a bone whose cariotype is said to be that of a human with access to time travel like the bears?
What did he look like, this Michel?
Maybe you are still a bear vet like the famous presentist Dr. Vilani, suspicious of this contemporary greed for time change?
And looking for mushrooms from Sabine that could calm the bear's greed for time travelling? Dangerous gluttony that leads their species to extinction?
Maybe you are finally a bear?
Take the time to imagine that you are a bear who travels in time ....
What is your favorite era? Are you addicted to a particular century? Which one?
Or are you attracted to change? In how many eras do you have friends? Lovers maybe?
Are they bears or humans?
The scene slowly blurs.
The orange swamp returns to full colour and you now hear the sound of the waves of the Baltic Sea around you, powerful, slow and jarring like the breathing of a whale or a giant catfish.
You are lying on the white sand and the sound of the sea mixes with your breathing. You breathe in and out slowly. Welcome to 2111. The sky is blue and the sand is clear. Adorable micro jelly fish waddle and shake on the glittery shore. Pink mosses dry in the arms of black algae.
You wake up from a nap not knowing what time it is. You are both tired and intoxicated by the sun. In your world, people live outside and close to nature. The wooden houses are either abandoned or dedicated to keeping objects and costumes for the reenactment sessions. You have the keys to the Vilani house and you suddenly remember that you left a felt hat lying around, probably from 2011.1, which was worn for wedding parades.
Your era still hasn't found a way to travel through time like bears do, but you're not a presentist. Like your friend Maurius, who loves the twelfth century with the whole Dalva gang and lives in 2111.1 when he works in IT and in a twelfth century reenactment when he goes home at night, you like to live in several eras at the same time. As a child you were covered in jewels because you had the symbolic key to several worlds, sometimes it was a bit much and there was this great controversy of incarnation on which the plotter-poet was very active.
Now, with the wisdom you have acquired, you have chosen one that seems to fit your aspirations and that never ceases to fascinate you.
You always keep a small edible card or two with you, and when you go there, alone or with friends, you nibble a little piece off the symbol.
Suddenly, a bear comes towards you...
What does he have to say to you?
.................
When you feel that your conversation with the bear is over, you breathe in and out ,slowly but surely and leave 2011.1
You float for a moment between times and dimensions and slowly pass through the door of another world.
It is 2011.1
You are back in the sea but this time you are undressing to disengage after that powerful and funny orgasm you gave yourself with a very large yellow flower, whose velvety blossoms, woody smell but also long textured stems troubled you earlier, after a presentist inspiration session of staring at a thing during a long period that got a bit out of hand.
Take a moment to remember that curious moment.
You now turn your inner eye towards the sea, the water is carrying aphrodites. A first naked woman comes running from the cold water, smiling and with a body sculpted by the run. Then another one, then another one again.
The secret of the bears was finally discovered when the Gargouillamini came out of the pond and you now come back from other worlds by throwing yourself naked into the sea.
You enjoy this vision and meditate on this new situation.
*It is easy to recognize time travelers. They look like people returning from the sea, drunk and tired from the sun, the soles of their feet burnt and smooth, their skin salty and their eyes full of horizon.
Their wet clothes sow grains of sand, like crumbs of happiness, which mark the way to their home. *
You take a deep breath and close the door of 2011.1 at your own pace, focusing on your breath over and over again and with each breath you return to the present.
Take the time you need and when you have arrived, you gently open your eyes making sure that all your limbs are back in good condition: to the here and now.
Welcome back. Hello again.

- The future already exists in the present, as potential. Futuring can therefore help you act in the present. It can help you become aware of the larger context in which your future unfolds and help you to understand what can and cannot be changed. Most importantly, being aware how your actions may influence the future can help increase your agency and responsibility in the present.
- See the present as an experimental ground for the future.
- Futures is a study of change and possibility.
- It looks at what can be considered constant and what variables could influence how the future could develop. Some of these variables might be within our capacity to change, others are beyond our control.
- It looks at the underlying causes of particular trends and helps us understand where our engagement might have the most effect.
- Most techniques are designed to discern particular patterns of change in past or current events, to speculate how change might happen and which directions it might take. Futuring can be a complex activity involving many carefully researched facets, or it can be as simple as telling a story that begins with “What if…”
- *
- We can no longer rely on the blueprints passed down by generations of priests, or dictators, or visionary scientists. We often have to make it up as we go along. Yet living from one day to the next is also not an option, with the looming threat of irreversible climate change and mass extinction breathing down our necks…
- So how do we reconcile the urgency of having to meaningfully act in the present with the importance of taking long term consequences into account?
- It has become increasingly important to make the multiplicity of futures more visible, accessible and discussable.
- We can design plausible roadmaps to understand how we might get from here to there, while being aware that the roadmap itself could disintegrate in the process.
- In other words, we have to learn how to live with contingencies.
- There are various methods and simple techniques that can be applied in different situations. None of them will provide a single solution to all of your problems of the future, but all of them can help with the feeling of being stuck in the present or overwhelmed by the possibilities and impossibilities of the future.
- In the absence of functional time-travel, such attempts rely on more mundane techniques borrowed from theatre, design or psychology. Experiential futurists create speculative artifacts, installations, pre-enactments, games or tactical interventions in public spaces.
- Hearing or reading something doesn’t penetrate as deeply as the understanding gained through experience.
