DURGA MONUMENT PICTURE

2

The fight between the Hindu goddess Durga and the demon is described in various Sanskrit texts and is well known to Hindus. The demon could change shape. He first appeared as a buffalo and was beheaded by Durga; his severed head is on the ground. Then he appeared in the form of a human and was again killed by the goddess, this time with a trident.

THIS IS THE ONLY INFORMATION THAT RIJKSMUSEUM PROVIDES ON THE MONUMENT

 BUILDING PICTURE

5

BUT THIS IS WHAT WE LEARNED FROM 1980 ICOM report

6

«The Rijksmuseum never reacted to information that its late 11th century Hindu stone statue  was most probably smuggled out of Bangladesh via the diplomatic bag»

7

Kees Schoemaker, secretary of the board at Rijksmuseum, tried to inform the museum

8

THIS is WHAT HAPPENED IN 2011 AND ONLY IN 2019 DID THE MUSEUM REACTED

9

PICTURE OF TACO DIBBETS + "We should have done it earlier and there is no excuse"

10

INDEED THERE IS NO EXCUSE. BECAUSE HERE IS THE STORY BEHIND THE OBJECTS’ ACQUISITION:

11

THE MUSEUM PURCHASED THE STATUE IN 1992 FROM PETER MARKS GALLERY IN NY FOR 65 000 USD

12

PETER MARKS PICTURE + Marks became a private art dealer and opened his gallery  in 1960. During this time he specialized in the sale of Southeast Asian and Islamic antiquities.

13
THE INVOICE FOR THE PURCHASE ALSO MENTIONED THAT THE STATUE PREVIOUSLY BELONGED TO DAVID NALIN COLLECTION

14

DAVID NALIN PICTURE

15

Dr. David Nalin was sent to Bangladesh  through the U.S. National Insititutes of Health  and became increasingly captivated by the region’s culture, and concerned for its artistic preservation in the face of mounting social conflicts that eventually enveloped the area and culminated in 1971.

16

WHAT IS IT EXACTLY THAT HAPPENED IN BANGLADESH IN 1971?

17

THE WAR PICTURES

18

During the 1970s, a genocide took place in present-day Bangladesh. Rough estimates approximate a death toll numbers of nearly 3 million. The systematic annihilation of the Bengali people by the Pakistani army during the Bangladesh Liberation War, targeted Hindu men.
