Did the changes improve users control over their data?
Actually, its the same control, but presented differently? Used to be less convenient -- but did anything change? You used to be able to opt-out ... so the practice changed, but technically nothing changed.
What advantages and disadvantages for Apple operations?
Build a good image: we are privacy, we are personal, you own your phone while hurting the competitors. Core operation of Apple: selling devices.
Danny [iphone user]: I felt different (when they introduced it), more in control but I felt unsure. Each time the companies asked ... maybe there is something behind it? It keeps you speculating!
What other companies were affected?
Google and Facebook that were mainly profiting off of targeted ads; they were the most impacted because of the crippling of the IDFA from iPhone users (huge share of the users).
Also, indirectly, Google will likely be forced to follow suit on Android by eventually making its equivalent technology, the Google Ad Identifier (GAID), also opt-in. https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnkoetsier/2020/06/29/apple-killed-the-idfa-what-else-dies/?sh=606b0c7b262f
How did the critics differ?
[we did not really get to this question, but instead discussed the language of the message] "Ask app not to track" is not exactly the same as "Disallow" so one critical viewpoint is that this is a way for apple to escape accountability while showing that they are still on the users' side.
+ A question from the group: If you say 'what did the privacy critics say', how do you find these critics? Is there a list of them? Where do they hang out?
