*Process Research Curators
At any time, there is a group of maximum 6 associated researchers involved in the apass research center.
By reviewing the contracts, research curators can assess at the beginning of ‘their’ block the status of the current associated researchers.
If for the next block, there are six or more associated researchers already involved, the call for applications remains closed. If there are less, it opens [could it be that it is always open, but that you announce for what periods places will be available?].
Research center curators organise at least one individual meeting with each associated researcher, and one collective meeting with all associated researchers.
Research center curators are first contact point for organising public events/publications that concern the associated researchers.
Applicants apply with the same deadline as programme participants, also when they are invited.
The current research center curator and/or one of the current associated researchers participates in the intakes.
If a participant is accepted, the current research center curator draws up a contract together with the associated researcher.
The RC and the associated researchers are also a core subject due to their implication in the making public of a.pass as a platform for research in the arts
*Process associated researchers
[this needs to be extended, it is a placeholder]
All AR have a tailor-made contract determining time of exchange, engagement and time spent.
AR arrive with a research question + a curriculum + a plan to document/archive research
There is no payment involved.
apass offers:
- A common budget (collectively decided upon)
- Each block at least one mentoring by the research curator
- Access to the program
AR do not receive a material budget nor personal mentoring (could they pay for it? If they pay per block they can have access to mentors?)
Duration of the association: in general a year, but this can be discussed/extended.
Q: Are we going to demand that a pre-PhD status will get a certificate of studies? (for the moment there is just the possibility of having an declaration)
Q: Keys/card? Insurance?
*Contract template
Name and short biography of the associated researcher:
Start and enddate:
Additional (institutional) partners involved in the associated research:
Questions:
- What is your research question?
- How will the research engage with the apass research center / something about how the association works
- How will you do your research?
- What methods will you apply?
- What resources will you use?
- What activities have you planned during the period of your association?
- In what way will you make your research public?
- How will you document your associated research?

Why the research center exists. RC as an organ; an autonomous organ in relation to apass. More a terminology than anything else. So what does that mean?
- As a way to 'make public'. The programme is too intense for that.
- Research curator: A way to rotate the staff/team to reflect, prepare, connect. Focus, writing, ...
- Q (funders): Where is the knowledge you (= apass) produce, how is that shared. RC responds to this.
- How to work long term with people that come through the programme. "Who will take over a.pass" --> associated researchers
Before: no curator, but money for associated researchers. Now: curator, but no budget for associated. Next try in 4 years.
Sarah: can you ask other things / at other places?
Lilia: maybe. but there is never time for this, so far.
We are starting with the RC actually now! It was never so clear?
Change from Elke to Lilia + Kristien and then re-clarifying.
10m round: How are you here, what are you looking at now.
I S A B E L
Happy this meeting is happening. RC as a home. Nuclear ideas develop; thinking, needing ... thinking together; a support for thinking. RC as a way to stay on track in a world that is sometimes overwhelming. So far people I work with are part of a.pass network. Now starting to get to archiving; coming to through that through practice of filmmaker. It seems that it needs to change. Archiving female bodies and its fluids. A library of fluids. A question of understanding the female abyss; wanting to see it as a landscape to be farmed. Need support to think, especially when it comes to archiving. Ways of comprehending the phenomena.
Femke: how to make this a home temporary? available for other people as well. clear happy ending and beginning?
Fast feminism - Shannon Bell
Isabel introducing the farm; a period she will work with multiple women to run a queered farm in Portugal. Upscaling, how to do that in a slow way?
Sina: What about the data? Un-anticipated knowledge. What are you recording? What are you sharing? Roundtable in Nadine. What about pricing?
Sara: Feminism and fermentation.
Sina: series: 2 or 3rd season. Orange is the new black -- inventing fetish economies from within the prison.
S I N A
Interested in a.pass; drawing closer. Planning to join the RC next september. Throwing things. What would it mean to 'mount' something. Mounting structures that host your interest. Symposium on animal body politics. Organise a symposium. Who? What? Where? What would it sound like?
Transitioning into another moment. Echotome + endless boundaries. Ecosystem without pre-defined relationship.
How to enable conversations, exchange. Modes of discussion. Not so much about representation.
Applying for a project to be done in Germany ... to create space/platform in Koeln.
Lilia: to begin, start ... it is a way to get going.
S A R A
Reworking a project proposal: Wicked technologies or wild fermentation.
Long time out of apass. Looking for a consistent way of working, to make the research parallel to the art-making.
Research not very efficient -- hard in current market. Fed up with the way the market works. To be in the RC means another rhythm.
It has many arms, I am not too bothered by connecting them too tightly now. Timespan: 3 years.
Wicked technologies: The Oblique/Queer/Anti-performative. Practice of fermentation = wild. Understanding fermentation and organise an event around it. Sharing, gathering around it, ... to make the RC home through it. A specific sub-field of feminism. Nature-culture.
When species meet / Gut feminism. Food-Fermentation-Feminism; underground groups. What is feminism nowadays. It is used a lot. A feminist choice to not brand it as feminism ferment. Is that part of its wickednes
Aesthetics + philosophy. Black theory, noise. When does sharing happen.
Dance and performance. Develop a method. A school. Need to go back to the body and its knowledge.
Wanting to ask VO for money.
1. Fermentation event
2. Workshop with Catherine Contour (hypnosis)
3. Working with female wicked choreographers. Working with improvisation. All working on dance; very broad understandings.
4. Workshop in apass / shared training
5. Translation + psychonalysis. Re-processing movie about dance and language (maybe not in apass)
6. A publication (writing/poetry)
7. Fermentation and a one month pop-up restaurant; make it into training
---
8. A new piece!
Lilia: Leo (?) participating now, works on dough as a gathering practice + Gosie. There is already a network.
Also, remember RC is a precarious situation. Focus can help. What can be best developed in apass context? Rotational system - different curators, people, ...
Isabel: Duration -- we all start together, is there a way to keep it together? Communication? A document? There are different timings.
Lilia: Archiving?
Isabel: Not so much working from a proposition.
Difference between programme and RC
- Who is the research center?
- Contracts
Femke: talking with you and during intakes we made the proposal to merge prephd (?) program and the position of the associate researcher. as. res. are usually ex apass. two positions are actually hte same.
what is the difference between as.res. and people in the program?
as.res. comes with a study plan, serious of questions and methods and an agenda. desire to find out certain things while sometone in the programs come to follow the program to nourish her/his research. two modes to relate to a.pass.
= we need an INTAKE (with research current, formulating a plan - THE CONTRACT- to make an explvcite relation to A.PAss. in terms of budget, expectation and t think toegther about the rooting of the work you do within the insittuion. there is a trace of what you do that can be transmitted... ARCHIVE.
CONTRACT: curriculum, timing, to give structure to you and others, to propose one public moment. (one of the task of the research center is to make public the knowledge). not to get lost too much... it follows the path of someone applying to a prephd.
SUPPORT: 5/6 researchers around at the time. budget available to the researchers that are there (collectively).
IMPLICATION in the program is important. how do we bridge the master program and research program. you meet the program curator of the research center alone and together once per block. for instance monday meeting was a proposition to come togehter. same in june it's a moment for coming together. Access to the programme (how to get the info). how to make the plublic possible.
Research center will keep changing. A collaborative environment. RCC (=Research Centre Curator ?!) will take initiative.
Shared interest: Critical life, feminist theory, archive, translation.
Publish a recipe book.
RC as a structure that can be used. It needs hands and brains.
Sara: The issue of the pre-phd. Thinking long term. Can apass help to apply for a phd.
Lilia: no. Level of research is phd.
How does apass frame itself vis-a-vis academic research? Interested in taking that seriously. Moving away from the edge of academia. Flirt is over?
Apass as the practical side of artistic research. You can not use the term pre-phd. Apass is not doing that work actually? It is not training for phd.
ref. Dasarts pre-phd. No selling phd; dedicated time.
Isabel: The horror of conferences of artistic research. Putting artisitic research in a certain frame. Need to stay rebellious.
Lilia: It was said that apass hosts pre-phd.
research and association!
PAF: from school of studies to forum of studies.
Senselab?
Sina: applied to phd right after apass. Not sure if he wants it. Specific way of asking specific answers. Certain seriousnessness of reading your work, peer review. (how could this be part ofen September. 2000 per block, including the activities of the Curator.
Important to make sure there is a meeting with Vladimir around the next core meeting in July.
"Queer seasoning"
An event in Kaaitheater costs 10.000 or so. There are informal relations with Kaastudios.
If you ask for money you need to know 5-6 months in advance. Also helps the quality.
