The Jung/Pauli concept of synchronicity
Olivier Perriquet
---

Conventional presentation of time /physics/psychology/

"The last parts will be more difficult. Or less prepared."
bridge certain conception of mind/matter, aim of Jung & Pauli

1 direction, there can be many others

Holistic approach to physics > continue Einstein
not conception of all physicists

- 'Time flies like an arrow'
introduced in 1928 by Arthur Eddington, astronomer -> not that old
entropy: measure of disorder, randomness that is always growing, law of physics: if you let free in closed system, it increases randomness (except if you bring in energy)
newtonian understanding of time & space: time is constant

'hidden' conventions:
arrow points to the right = future. 'future is ahead'
ref: interfaces, timeline for editing film/sound. Spatial representation of time. strong connection space/time

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrow_of_time

[?? is die conventie hetzelfde in taalculturen waar de leesrichting ander is ? hebreeuws / arabisch ? ]

- The future is sometimes behind
Aymara language (nunez & sweetser, 2006)

Navajo: The future is down.

Einstein: space-time continuum
in classical (pre-einstein) newtonian mechaniscs gravitation force, gravity is linear, a continuity. Time and space can be thought of as separate.
bodies are following trajectories submitted to that force
in einsteins space-time continuum: shifting, we imagine we are in 3D, but represented as 2D space
space is not flat, deformations are proportional to the mass of the bodies

"Here it is physical, so you can see how the metaphor works"

not in euclidean geometry, every body follows geodesic trajectory; if you give it right energy it will stay on the same trajectory, otherwise following own route, elliptical, time depends on where you are, more interrelational.
Relativity = localized geometry; a continuity that is always changing.

- Light cones & world lines
at each position in that space-time continuum, you have a cone that represents all the world lines

Worldlines: Time passes through the Hyperspace of the Present.

if I'm an observer: all the points that are xxx the cone, are reachable

NOW is different for each observer. Observers can/need to/find a way to synchronize their NOWs.

question of synchronisation of the 'nows', important in relativity: each observer is in her own now
Einstein synchronisation: time that you need to go from one place to the other, ...
Speed of light is determining

Elle: "What are the qualities of the now?"
Time doesn't flow at the same speed, the closer I get to speed of light, the slower time flows
If I'm very close to speed of light, time would almost be still -- eternal now.
Paradox of the twins (Languevin???): if twin would travel around earth, when he comes back, 20y on earth would be 10 min for him/her

[BLACK HOLES COMING UP]

Perihelion of Mercury was not exaclty on place astronomers would think, they thought there would be another planet (named: Vulcan) in between
they didn't find it
slight difference can be explained by theory of relativities

Discrepencies in planet observations are result of bending light + bending time.
deformation around the sun, can be seen during an exclipse
this is called 'gravitational lens', huge bodies that deform the beams of light

Black hole == collapse of gravity.
if this body is really massive (8x volume of the sun), it creates a hole in the surface
everything that approaches hole, is absorbed by hole
theoretical prediction

"critical radius", "critical mass"

fear at Cern to create a black hole of their own, and get us in

black holes as laboratories for thought experiments.
if you're in black hole, the time flows backwards
is observed for tiny particles, you would be totally disintegrated if you come close to black hole
cfr Jean-Pierre Luminé, Black Holes (book), throw all our wast in black hole, energy that is brought back could feed into station
cfr Oulipo: contraptonyme

[black hole is anti-enlightment?]

"Black holes are a mathematical consequence of relativity"
theory of relativity was first theory, then observed....
'it should be what happened'

Wormholes and entanglement
another prediction of the theory
surface that is scratched binds elsewhere

Quantum entanglement. Yeah.
Minkovski space (mathematician) is 4 dimensional space, now there are theories of universe in 10 dimensions
if we would be able to go in the black hole, we would be able to get out elsewhere in the universe
shortcut if you pass by the blackhole
'back to the future'
both time & space become hyperbolic!

Entanglement < quantum physics
2 particles that are remote would influence each other
distant causal instantaneous connection, that contradicts traditional causality in physics
hot topic now to bridge these 2 theories, Einsteins relativity & quantum physics, still unsolved

Donna Haraway, Staying with the trouble (2016): Hyperbolic Spaces as 'surfaces of the possible'.
"Rolling inward enables rolling outward; the shape of life’s motion traces a hyperbolic space, swooping and fluting like the folds of a frilled lettuce, coral reef, or bit of crocheting."
:-)

this was operational conception of time, allows to be measured

my conception of time is completely different
these models do not help me to think of my actual experience of time
I experience encreasing entropy: I experience passage of time, growing older
but not represent it in this way

[age/ageing vs time?]

idea of cyclic time
more used in eastern part of the world
gathering notes on an island, 1 week in same place
competition between 2 ways of feeling time: explore the surrounding/more space (time arrow) or stay in coffee bar doing remote work installing a ritual (cyclic)
each one would feed the other
sthg during walk would remind me sthg that I experienced in past:
arrow/spatial: stacking of perceptions
cyclical [did he say ritual? I think so, as part of it]: every time would be different.
dialectic between both

Bergson: we have little experience of time in past, little of future, that is what everything is built on
Clocks as tools for synchronisation (but how do they operate on perceptions of time?)

when we are measuring time in my perception, we need sthg cyclic
cycle meets arrow
cyclic time of the stomach that makes noise, as tool for observation of cyclic time

[Madeleine de Proust
https://www.the-philosophy.com/proust-madeleine]

"we know that everything is driven by nerve impulses"
cfr consciousness: latest theory of the brain
delay between moment you act & moment you are aware of it
Benjamin Libet, neural scientist (book Mind Time): body/brain initiate mouvement before we are aware of it
inhibition mouvement everywhere
it questions free will
ex stop the car because someone is crossing car, being in control is illusion

The Dream of the golden scarab, Yung
event that enables the theory to start

[New Materialism and issues with causality?]
[Synchronicity vs. Agential Cut?]

synchronicity:
    - coincidence in time of 2 or more causally unrelated events which have same meaning
    - acausal meaningful coincidence between a psychic event and phenomenon in the world
Yung: this is not a coincidence, it needs to have strong emotional impact on the situation

birds, Jung
premonition/precognition based on acausal relation
cfr Philip K Dick
cfr synchronous discovery of the light bulb/mobile telephone
hightened attention for something specific and you make the link
in most examples we can think of causal relationship, ex coq singing / sun...
but maybe not, cfr Mercury position...
maybe it needs a shift of conception
it is like 'terra incognita', I want to understand whether it is random or not

"I really want to understand whether it is random or not"

not only connected with ESP (extra sensorial person)
personal experience: on remote island, discussion, name a girl that you find sexy, I said France Gall
the day after I discovered she died - related to the emotional
song Der Computer Nr. 3  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Rtdb_zgqdQ?

Dean Radin, Premonition. book on extrasensory perceptions http://www.deanradin.org/
stories before 9/11
go against principal of causality
is 'confirmation bias' in a memory
it has to do with pattern recognition: most understanding of universe is hallucination....

immune system in body, the way it reacts to attack, has to do with pattern recogniiton
in both cases, we have to do with a network / swarm of relations
the amount of antibodies we have in system, is same as amount of neurons we have in brain
cfr Francisco Varela (biologist, worked in France, concept of 'enaction', trying to understand what would be 'life', https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enactivism)
unbodied cognition: we should not forget that body is first interface to world
body able to do pattern recognition on its own, without connection to brain, is also interesting

Elle: it seems from examples that synchronicity is related to recognition
cfr déjà-vus
synchronization of time would make it easier for people working with it, recognizing the same.... common vocabulary?
also a way of being manipulated
how to synchronize meeting of inner & outer view

relation time + recognition (is pattern? or rhythm?)

there may be hidden ways to connect to other people and share patterns?
E: trying to make hypothesis: if synchronicity is link between internal emotion & external event, is it possible to do the opposite, starting to experiment the world in same way to internalize, cfr education system

F: if space/time becomes hyperbolic, why causal relations seem to exist?
going from causal/probable to possible, agency comes back with vengeance
multidimensionality of space/time gives many possibilities to act/see
premonition is repair of linearity?
multiplicity of it is interesting

O: not talking about hyperbolic space, i switched to personal experience
coincidences could also be things I observe in outside world that coincide with emotional state

backward causation.
if you say it other way round/reverse arrow of time, there would be no problem
recognize a pattern that would make us interpret sthg that happened before
infinite nr of possibilites allows certain degree of freedom
related to emotional state, not 'anodin', may have other explanations
suspension of judgement, stgh that is unexplained

Wolfgang Ernst Pauli (1900-1958)
Nobel Prize of Physics, spiritual son of Einstein
one of founders of quantum mechanics

[Worked with Bohr]

Jung spiritual son of Freud & dissident, disagreed with sexual vision
approached myths, etnology
Pauli was patient of Yung
Yung coined term of 'synchronicity', explored it with his patients
concept grew from their correspondance

collection of dreams, ex dream of the world clock
Yung made connection to kabbalistic philosophy
at origin of what he calls 'archetypes': patterns/symbolic forms that are widely shared amongst people, not dependent so much on culture
express themselves through dreams, personal dreams, myths/narratives

with archetypes Yung introduced 'objective ground' in psychology: intrusion of reality in subjective matter
in discovery of quantum mechanics world & subjects observing world cannot be disconnected: intrusion of subject into objective manner

both passed period of turmoils
ex the Pauli effect: was known by his colleagues to influence in negative way the experiments
things broke down, glass exploded...
Pauli-effect: it happened but he was not there - his train was stopping nearby

buddhist: there is only walking, not a man walking
examples: breaking of the boundary between subjects/objects, always interacted
is synchronicity a manifestation of non-dualist approach & quantum physics?
how do you relate it to rational thinking/knowing of science

experience that everything becomes meaningful without rational explanation
psychiatrics: when they meet people who experience constant synchronicity, they are autists, paranoids, people who suffer from it

you learn a filter, but filter is expanded...
boundaries are blurred, co-made, co-constructed

'objectivity'
separation between object/subject is methodology
you cannot do science of synchronicity, it does not fit the methodology
science & rationality are not coincidence
we need to find other methodology to explore synchronicity

ex work with group of women for long time, start bleeding together
synchronization of time/biological clock
subjectivity of how we see the world, can it be interlinked, so we see the non-separateness

How to grow singularity. synchronicity and collectivity

Jung: existence of paranormality
intersubjectivity: shared symbols, references: synchronicity is always present, even if we do not experience all the time
light form of hypnosis
'we can organise synchronicity': try to recognize person in the clouds, it takes time but it will happen
-> synchronous: there is no passing of time

memories that hit you
memories faillable, you make it larger when you write it down, manufacture memory
-> element of statistical chance and how they are retold
socially constructed, manufacture relations

interesting: because it gives us feeling that we can break with normal philosophy

In Time

Just in time

"For her part, Cheris wouldn’t have minded holing up in the shadow of a rock and sleeping for a week. The week was one of the few time measures the hexarchate didn’t regulate. In her old home, the City of Ravens Feasting, they used the eight-day week. When she was tired, it was easy to lapse out of the military ten-day week into the eight. In the furtive tradition of her mother’s people, today would be Carrion Day, a reminder of the importance of scavengers. It was difficult to agree."
