this is
another etherpad for us <3 this time to share thoughts and ideas with regard to the purported midterm presentation~
common feeling among some of us that white-cubing this exhibition feels counter-intuitive and contradictory after all that we have read and spoken about together these past few months. even calling it an exhibition i have doubts about.
also thinking about community and relations between us all as a group; how can we use this opportunity to get to know each other outside of the classroom? if we had a shared studio space to work in, this would happen more organically—practically, there is simply no SPACE for "artistic knowing" that is communal.
can we turn this "presentation" moment into a workshop? can we occupy the space physically with our bodies for the time allotted? can we turn it into a make-shift studio space? Would also love to know.can we move towards a process-based way of working, one that involves collaboration?i like this idea, more like a making in the moment, getting to know each other as makers. as we don't really know this part of each other yet. I agree!truee story
some ideas that ilja and i had to work from—please feel free to add yours, in whatever format that may be:
(1) bringing something to share with each other—instead of presenting work to the teachers, to the group, to the other students of uva (to which extent they give a shit is unclear ah yes, this!!!!!!), can we address each other through this artistic doing we have been asked to do? <33
(2) sharing writing, writing together, reading each other's writing, writing each other's reading! we are all writing a lot, but these papers are hardly ever read by more than two pairs of eyes—yours and the professor's. could we proliferate our writing amongst each other? could we print these texts and work with them together, to bring materiality to the words for once? just fragments, can we edit each other's texts? maybe everyone reads a diary entry?<3 maybe everyone writes a reflection about the course, one that is steeped in the personal and does not have to be footnoted or referenced correctly.:) can we get a printer and print and photocopy and edit and tear up and stick words together?
(3) reflecting upon THE UNIVERSITY as a context; our relationships with each other and with the professors. we talk about teacher, learning, institutionalisation—but what are the very real implications of these ideas??? how do we feel in this container? how do we relate to each other as a result? how do we reconfigure ourselves, our artistic practice, our roles as learners as a result? Here i also have to think of aga's comment and mia's research on the history of the buildings we occupy. can we perhaps use this corridor/toilet<3 space as a starting point to reflect on the buildings we use? yes! Oehh <3we gonna address those radiators hahaha
other random notes:
- how to create a space in which everyone can share?
- how to open up to each other? we play games together, we spend time together outside of class! we barely know each other, although we already feel strangely at home around each other...?
- is there a budget??? good question!
- can we turn this 'publication' we have to make into a process that is shared instead of a product that a smaller group must produce?yes please can we question why there must always be A TEXT !!!!!!!!!present to explicate artistic doing and working?YES Ma'amagree
- what's up with the implied theoretical language of the artistic researcher? can we have fun mixing theory with storytelling and profanities? cone.
- can we bring in day-to-day reality, application of learning? the poetics and human aspects of studying; of ANYTHING? not sure i understand this one...
- how can we document, archive, speak about our collective belonging and struggle within the programme? this programme has existed for 15 years; what was its past and what is its future? 15 years?! (what indeed has been the development of the course?) how do we insert ourselves into this broader discourse? (contact/collaboration with second years maybe even teachers? They also have the weird block 3 and also in the sense of community)
- could we use this time to find a mode of collecting the struggles/steps thusfar in the program to organize studiospaces for us? the second year already started a webflatform on which they share resources and documentation of past requests of spaces. the struggle for space/belonging sounds very much fitting for the artistic research aspect (as it also has trubble fitting in anywhere..) interesting to think aboutagrre
what if... we use this as an opportunity to transform that white cube into a utopian space where we all are working/crearting (lol this was a typo and sounds like farting haha)/researching together... so the exhibitian becomes an imagined possibility for if we had a joint studiospace? Love it so we make it into a little glimpse of what we are imagining... and in this way all our individual practices could exist too, as works in progress, always in the making... finding common place in our differences that's what the glass surrounding our cube made me think. like we are put in an aquarium... let's use what we have and transform it! the glass makes it kind of like we are in a zoo/hospital/jail/squash court lol, we are inside this glass and the audience is outside, looking in... so we can play with this whole situation as well! you know those labs that have a science lookthrough, or fancy restaurants with view into the chefs..? not that this is the main idea, but i think we can play with sounds great! visibility/authorship/hierarchies_of_the_gaze/boundaries/science_vs._art/.........
I also like this idea, reflection on our position by starting at the physical place (the building/ corridor). It stood out to me, after talking to a friend, that our position in the university is extremely fragile. We are reading so much about this fight for validation of embodied knowledge, but the truth is we are not only reading it we are the subject of it, we materialise this fight. !! Good point. It's a special position we are in, but also so much of an experiment. I think this is interesting; what our position within this university is. It does feel like we literally are occupying a space 'that is not ours'. Indeed: we have this strange "backwards" position at the university almost, when we consider how we are already beyond or past the idea that we can learn through reading and writing but yet we all willingly ended up here in this university where writing and reading is once again the dominant (if not only) source to learning.Or that many still believe we should not be in. How can we occupy this space in a productive way? How can we make 'ourselves at home'? How can we take in this space without ending up becoming just an obstacle infront of the toilet, or blocking the hallway for the users of this building? hehe :) maybe we should squat this space, sleep a few night there? yes! Maybe this is a fantasy, but I do like the idea of creating a context through which we can 'produce' material that is a response. A sleepover with storytime; a collective being together. Bodies just being. yes! What are our bodies doing in this space? What position does the BODY have in an university?
I do understand there are some of us that perhaps want to keep close to their material. Personally i see it more like a way of thinking that perhaps makes up you praxis and that 'way of thinking' can be used in many different ways.(yes, also working on a new project within a month seems a bit of a strech, only to have i be on display for 3 days, lol)What does is mean to make something together? And what does it mean to let go of your material? I guess we need to figure out if we want to make a collective 'statement' and if this works for everyone?
I imagine that this could be an opportunity for us, like mentioned above, as a group to think together, to share and perhaps make. The time in this master program will go by so so fast, and only now we are in the context of being a group, after this (now) 1,5 year there will still be an long individual path.
idea: we all share a secret with each other but in a way available for the audience too. Using something (a medium) that allows for transmission. Often school or university corridors are a place of gossip. Gossip is a very interesting way of transmitting knowledge, which often also is secretive. (aga: I wanna use a phone. leave it in the space and programme it for an annonymous call that will answer automatically and people will be able to hear what the message is, proly some gossip) aga: i will also research the building and research the hollywood imageries on gossiping school people. Publication can be a binder (folder book) with a collection of gossips/artifacts/secrets (very '90/'00 aesthetic if you know what i mean), but this idea is also so obvious...i don't like it already.
THE BUILDING: bg.2 first and second floor next to staircase ART HISTORY BUILDING
I feel like this wordpad (?) brainstorm i a great starting point, for everyone to open up and share visions and ideas!
sharing process/studio photos with each other too while we are away during break...? while we don't have a physical space we can use the digital to the maximum and as well those here can protect home base :D meet in parks, public spaces, school spaces etc if our practices allow or do studio visits with each other.yeeeeah I Like this idea of sharing online our workprocess, or do studio/park visits with each other.
Material to use: everything in the university
Notes with Florian
- We can also devide the function of the two floors
Idea: Are we going to meet each other in/during january, to get to know each other better and get to know how we work. visit each other's spaces (: Sharing online + offline
Maybe fun and also handy to make a january overview of our availability, when we are in the country and when we are away.
Also, here is a fun space to meet digitally!: https://workadventu.re/ (We can have our own pixel characters)
Monday 16th, sharing gossip in the space, people who can't come via digital means. Also meet at the space monday the 23th.
gossip as a point of departure: let's start sharing secrets with each other~
bringing an object on the 16th to share with each other<3
- one or several objects: or a text, an image, a story -- something that can fuel the conversation and drive the project
Can we also ask questions on the pad? So our startingpoint now is anything you want bring it to the meeting? Not focussing on gossip, the building, or our position in the building?
At the moment some people from the 3dr year formed a research group for their 6EC tutorial (this is the one that Mia spoke about today, that could be an internship) in which they research the format of that EC tutorial itself. They are questioning what it is for and what it can be; as there are still many questions from the students about this EC.
Maybe we are in a similar position in which we also question the format of this tutorial/ exhibition; why do we need to organise an exhibition? Why a white space, why an artist’s work presentation and why a publication with descriptions of our works? Do these formats fit our readings and our thinking?
Maybe to start we can write a (small) manifesto in which we describe what we as a group would like to gain from this experience, (and from these guest teachers?) We of course already touched upon some elements, but if we can conclude what we all would like to gain from this we can build upon those points.
Or we freestyle on the 16th? I like this idea

how to decorate the space? can we bring a table we like? it looks like a dentist office
do we sit on the floor? do we sit on chairs? how do we open up the working space? do we want everyone to be able to join?
Aga idea: phone, overhearing viral message accidentally as an artwork, this was a message from an artist years ago, we can open it up with messages from ones own (art?) context, who wants can contribute, private/public playing field. You can just record a message that would be played as voice message on the phone for the visitors to feel like they are overhearing somthing they shouldn't (the phone will be left on charger in the toilets area with a speaker on) this is a cute idea
Working title?
No one is a dj !!!
Smaller group discussions, group (Aga, Souzanna, Nava, Shanna, Leyla)
printing ideas:
Print every 30 min
Blank after print
Loop printing, endless paper
Other ideas:
-Content of writings: Personal relationship to the program, the building
images, visual, video,
-Excerscises or prompts
-Dating apps have a lot of prompts on how to write fiction about yourself
-profiling
-writing on the toilet
-curtains
-what are the aesthetics of occupying
-what decorations do we need to feel like occupying the space?
-the space is trying
-bring textiles? carpets?
-loop paper / mobius strip
How to continue?
coming week is preparations for printer and facilitate our group working days and coming together for breakfast or coffee
Next week is the work week when everyone is done with their papers.
Group 2:
- What do we need for the space to accomodate us? use energy to get familiar to the structures of the school, use this time for these practicalities. Resources, are they people already working around this? How does the school work, can we hack it to get a space for the artistic research group?
- Acessebility of the builing
- walk and recording the building, the space of it
- sharing thoughts on the toilet writing on the walls: talking with the people maintaining the toilets, gossip?
- feels like there are two ideas design, architectural, facilitations of the building and printer idea.
- we are all people that have specific needs, the standardization of the space work for an ideal person, who does it image to be the perfect person?
- A question for the writing could be what are our needs?
To do for this week:
- setting up printer (Souzanna, Aga, Leyla, wietske? :)
- prompts for writing (Aga, Shanna isabel, chloë (aga: two truths and a lie/never have i ever/one line at a time?/taking an existing text and creating blanks that we fill with different meanings????)
- facilitation of the space, decorations (Shanna, Ilja, Kirsten,
- find out about resources of UVA and the building (Nor, Tanja, Nava, Leyla)
- reading Mia's texts (everyone)
- gathering personal writings (everyone)
- Communication for the building/outside world (Ilja, Wietske)
Hi, Im assuming the above is for the people who want to collaborate. I will be focussing on my own research practice. are there more people not doing collaborative work? I have really little time to actually do some work, and will do it in my studio [barbara] Yes what you write is true, everyone should do and participate how they want, so no pressure.
what is the thing about printers?
I am not against the idea of using printers etc but using endless amounts(?) of paper does not go together with my ideas of sustainable behaviour - loop paper /mobius strip - that will print allover itself time and time again
i don't understand the idea but i agree with the sustainability concern a printer that prints in intervals whatever we've written during the exhibition. etherpad will be on one server, but file will be shared with multiple devices. The printer gets a signal from server and is printing for example every 30 minuts. so even if there's en empty page it prints. to be suistainable we've came up with an idea of a loop paper/mobius strip so it print endlessly on the same piece of paper on top of what was there before.Nice!
@green @pale_red – I looked into using Möbius strips in regular printers. It’d require deactivating paper sensors in the actual printer, otherwise it will “choke” with paper and won’t print. We can always give it a try. Maybe the printer we’ll have will work with it but it also might be beyond our skills. So we should think of an alternative idea for the publication/group writing. Otherwise we’ll use too much paper
anyway all ideas are welcome - how to make the publication physical but suistainable and make sense of a group writing
Email to Florian about decoration 18/01:
Dear Florian,
Whilst discussing with others of the group around the "decoration" of the space, we are wishing to have a sewing machine present throughout the week. We are starting to see the space as a patch work, that we can sew both the prints as a binding method, and textiles for curtains or other purposes. I would be oke with bringing mine but only if I can store it safely somewhere when we are not in the space. Do you know of any possibilities? If not I can ask Jeanne tomorrow.
Warmly,
Ilja
Meeting Ilja and Wietske 19/01/2023_communication_with_building_invite?
Who do we communicate what to?
How?
- Perhaps it is just a post-it note(self-made from a4+tape+fat marker), following the generic/office aesthetics. (Asks for temporality, patchwork, can be added to), we see it as a form for documentation(patchwall of process), schedule(10 am breakfast, writing session 2pm) and announcement(who are we, what are we doing) simultaneously.
- cut up a4, we could add to the message with another piece of paper of what we are doing day by day since it will most likely change. Like: today we will eat breakfast together, today we will take a day off from the space.
What?
- We will make art for a week
- We need a place to get to know each other
- We will work together
- Who is this space for?
- Why?
23/01/2023 Meeting Florian, Anna, Chloë, Anna, Leyla, Kirsten, Nava, Isabel, Ilja
F: Our spaces are occupied, also the exhitbion downstairs, she will take the exhibition a part sooner then expected.
L: Cards still don't work, we have to activate them at the entrance of the building
F: I have spoken to a few of you, most of you are now work individually.
K: Is there a date for the publication when it has to be done?
F: it is a bit stuffed, last minute, deadlines, the publication is about that you write about what you are doing, that is also the excercise. I want you to write about what you are doing, and send it to me. I will start with other information, and then add all your texts. Friday deadline, 300 words, for the respondants to get an idea of what you are doing, so they don't have to react to it on the spot.
Ilja (thoughts, not speech): do we want this? does this make sense if you work collectively? haven't we written enough? can we show writing differently, more new words? what about the words we just spend weeks on? Where do these efforts go?
Another question: Who wants to work with me on a project, that we propose and present? We can read our writings, etc, the things we have been discussing but till now feel lost and not regonized.
Isabel: it is maybe good to find out who is the core group for the collective work, the "collective group" can meet on wednesday afternoon.
So list:
Who is commited to the collective work/project?: (Available preferably Wednesday/ and or Thursday)
- isabel wednesday & thursday~
- Ilja wednesday & thursday
- Wietske Wednesday & thursday (till 15:30 ish) & next week
- Chloë wednesday & thursday & next week fully
- Nava (wednesday & Thursday & next week)
- Leyla (wednesday & next week fully)
- Anna (wednesday&thursday until afternoon)
- nor (tues from 1pm, wed until 4pm, thur from 11:30am)
- aga (wednesday, friday from 15, sunday, tuesday, wed, thur, fri)
-Shanna (wednesday, thursday, & next week fully, only tuesday after 12h)
Who is commited to individual work around the theme and want to discuss with the collective group?
- Souzanna (available Wednesday ,Thursday, Friday and next week the same)
- Rosa (available Friday and next week fully)
Kirsten (tuesday,wednesday,whole next week)
-pip (wed, thu, friday whenever else.) dunno if i want to join on the collab but am curious. also i have no idea what i would do otherwise. i miss you all very much. <3
Who wants to work indiviually?
- Anna (depending if I find access to the site/materials I am interested)
-Barbara..working individually, Not sure what I will do. Im sick now and rest of the week leaving for england. Will have 1 day to do/make something
and above there are also 'working groups' - prompts for text, facilitation etc...???? @ilja check it! Yes lets go through these groups after this, update each other etc..
Individual working people can take responsibilty for updating the class on their process and their needs
Rosa: I have this in mind: 1 very small fluffy painting that is squeesed under one table leg so if I can place a painting under one of the table legs i would be happy
Sousana: my idea is basically to share a secret with a qrcode via your phone that I suppose to not tell and then just share it in any available space in a small screen like tablet or something so I won't need much space
About the printer I think I can do the coding but i don't have a printer to check of or how it works
Printer update:
So we do not have time for the specific code for the printer (consider that I will be part of the coding-sousana but I don't have a printer to be sure if the code works ), can we think of this an analogue way, we use the printer here. Paper use concern: print on same paper
Theme: Kirsten: embodiment of the space/experiencing space through walking and sound
Wietske: role and position as artistic researchers/individuals in the UVA. Subjective experience
Nor: Reflection of how to use the space, occupying the space, acessebility matters are long therm efforts. Expo is occupying and seeing if we can extend it, not to be super realistic.
Isabel: Epistomarly writing, writing as letters, or address, address someone or something. Letters to each other, letters, to florian? address professors. Faces of authority, florian represents the school, we can addres the building. combine these two realms. Easier to access yourself, texting does the same thing, academic text do the samething. pretend to have a neutral form, but there is always an I, a subjective person behind it. Dating show, change all the fact, we lie about ourselves 25% towards friends, 1/3 to lovers, make up all the facts. Aga's idea. The lies are more true, if you can choose.
Chloë: radical fiction, radical auto-biography, because of the writing we create new experiences, because by imaging and writing this become real.
Gamefiy, university aesthetics, Arbretrary, printer, structure of uni, post-its, clocks. schedule: coffee breaks etc. I think about Aga's presentation and Wietske's prompts. Q's. Everything beign of wheels, makes everything a stage, a prompts, everything just because a decor piece. Setting alien, artificial space. if no one reads this paper, did you write the paper? Is it very different for art school? No one cared about your art? It is a practise. In art school we are more engaged with others of the class, here we are not even interacting with each others writing.
What will we write together?
Lets write 10.000 words together
next day lets edit it down to 1000 words
collect all the art in the building and hang
make a floorplan for the "exhibition" of the building of all the art, use art to fictionalise
the paper jam
force breaks during the exhibtion, like the 25-5-25-5
occupy uva online study platform: https://uba.uva.nl/en/visiting-and-studying/online-study-space/online-study-space.html
prepare cues for actions
1 for time
1 for what
use monday to prepare prompts and wednesday we execute the list
