MEETING of 7 APRIL 2015

* An introduction round to start the meeting :

Can you introduce your favourite tool ?

    Julien: Anything web, Python and f/loss tools in general.
    Uses scripts to create bots on the web and social media, and to create visuals in Blender, processing or anything else supporting scripts. Project Lovemachine: http://lovemachine.cc (A bot that will log into your facebook account and like everything your friends do on Facebook.)
    Heidrun: My favorite tools are existing in "real" space. So i love social networks in real space and my tool is to do setups to meet and communicate there in a special way. I'm bulilding models on different scales to show what I see and prepare... I used to work with the translation from discussions into models in space... that's also about the different speeds we have in communication processes. Like we have on IRC, as a possibility to find specific forms of expression of thoughts.
    Agnese; Not my favourite, but what I'm mostly working on now it's mainstream social networks. Also Freenet. As the opposite. I don't like fb and twitter but i work a lot on those and I'm observing people behaviour.
    Likes frustrating the audience. Also language is my basic tool. I love to use a ninenties free software that we wrote called Sparaconcetti to dismantle language in a visual way during live performances.
    Ushi: Chooses free open Source tools when she needs them., among others: freemind, audacity, inkscape, celtex, also Fb,Twitter as Marketing tool and critical reflexion possibility - likes also to improvise
    Pascale: Body, specific space, online archives. Obsessed  with the connection, translation from body to machine and machine to  body, mainly by performing with different protocols (sound, webcam,  physical group) Love the idea of Feedback.
Here is an archive of a residency project with 20 chroregraphers that I worked on, and I made the Black to Black page. It is a kind of daily cadavre exquis.: http://spidernight.eu/live/index.html. Also worked on a project 'huis clos' with Annie Abrahams where private content from the web was used. A closed, confined situation in which we communicated with the outside througgh social networks.
        IOhannes: Programming (any): Pd, C/C++, python
                       preferrably in realtime (as live coding performance)

    * Some favorite songs, funny stuff, or talk about your hobby or pet or other banal stuff
    -> to get to know each other to find a common ground, doesnt necesarily have to do with your work

    Pascale:http://youtu.be/A8yjNbcKkNY
    Peter: http://www.classicmagic.net/tricks/mid_air_vanishing.php
    Julien: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxch-yi14BE
    Reni: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GijLoiVkmYI
    (the source is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KkOCeAtKHIc)

* Theme's / topics you think we should work on in Graz.

    * Transforming identity , on / ofline places, physical & virtual , communication through networks .. )
    * Maybe a dayplanner for a "perfect" live...(just popped up as an idea)
    * Maybe we can also think about something to take away for visitors
    * Could the show be something evolving, unfixed, like having moving walls, or objects to project images upon or not, mirrors that can be (de)placed by the public (changing planes)
    * Agnese; Identity/Anonimity  Virtual spaces VS Real Spaces. I'm obsessed with how much people behave horribly online, they are not as horrible in real life. I would like to make mask from common people avatars to invite visitors of the exhibiiton to wear.  Mirrors and mask... it would be interesting. When I talk about mask I imagine to print real faces of all this people that create profile on the social networks like facebook and stuff.  I also would like to work on language. Sample discourse from the social networks, create bot that chat with you like they are real people just sampling from the language that people use online. In the middle of the bot there should be also some real *us* and people are triggered to find or observe the difference between real persons and bot. It my be a sort of "Labyrinth of identities" where you wear the mask, get lost thought the moving mirrors, stop to chat on postations without knowing if you are chatting with  a bot or with somelse in the room or somwhere else in the world)
    * Social media avatars, how we percieve ourselves through social media and how scripting it is percieved and/or useful
    * Work and what work will become in the future. Important elements are: disinformation, big data, friends in pockets, encryption, security, post snowden effects, basic income. Funny times are over. Activist approach necessary, real life consequences of technology. I want Freedom. Darknet. The real darknet is not the freenet but the net of obsessive and compulsive desire of dispossessed users
    * "here", mirrorring, blurring, information travels ... find a kind of spatial setup about the theoretical and virtual approaches
    * Orakel/a life coach Scenario

(((
    Between brackets: Maybe we can think about a subtitle of the Graz-version of Iteration:
    possible subtitles:
    Mirrors and Masks (Iteration - Redundance - Mirror - Recursive)
    What is the real space? Was ist der wirkliche Raum?
    Dreaming the dark behind masks
    Deep identities /
    Bright profiles/Dark self
    Labyrinth of identities
)))

 What would you prefer to happen / not to happen during the residency ?

Some points to resume discussion up to now:
    * Reni's desire is to take time for each other and working together, conviviality, going for a walk.
    * Would prefere fun and obsession,
    * Prevent stress
    * Protocolised walks, to bridge between scripting, machine work, exercise, inserting routines,
    (1 step forward, 3 steps backwards, 2 steps on the side, 2 steps on the other side.)
    * We are not a commodity , is there place for disfunctionality, illness, ...
    * Experiment is welcome
    * Aikido class, Thuy Phap, ...
    * The idea of repetitive action comes up.
    * Ghost walking: In relation to this, for inspiration, here's a little video with 1000 ghost riders on the same track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zG5XJY18y-o
   Ghost car = representation of your "best lap" in a racing game. So you can actually "compete" against yourself. Or follow yourself as you've done your best lap earlier. Imagine doing a walk. And the next day, you do the same one, but you see yourself in the street as a ghost and can observe the very subtel movement you've done the day before. Leaving you the choice to copy or "improve" your last walk.
++ Q: this would mean we would have to observe/monitor our selves. Monitoring by smartphone that we have in our pockets ? (apart from IOhannes :-) )
** Interaction with the tools, and the influences of machines/communication/setups.
** repetitive actions can be used also as a methode to slowdown and to find yourself again inbetween real and virtal space.
** (mediating the day / re-tell the story daily, so we can get rid of stuff we dont need - on paper that can usually stay much longer
a kind of policy) "let me try to rephrase this...."
** A light space would be welcome - light from the outside or artificial - not a dark space (but Dark too )
**Agnese wants to work on the project itself, I'd love to research on the textual side. Unluckly I will have to work on my daily job as well, I can't drop it :(

THE POINTS BELOW WE COULD START WITH THE NEXT MEETING:
    MEETING OF 14 APRIL:

    (REMARK OF PETER WRITING IN EDIT MODE: )
    Here is more or less where we left off after the meeting of 7 april. The points below where on the pad, but we haven't really gone over them during the IRC. It woud be good if the 14th we start with these before getting back to the theme etc.

agenda:
- theme
- work distribution
- concrete stuff: money / hosting / space / time

It would be good if we could address division of tasks during the 10 days: who feels like doing what?
Do you feel like working with software?
Writing a scenario, think about the spatialization of the exhibition?
Agnese feels like working on communication, writing, collecting texts or visual materials to be printed or whatever.
Of course these questions are related to preparing the contents -> what will we work on ?
Tools come with the tasks, is all the tool knowledge that we need available in the team or should we look elsewehere for it ?

Explain the available infrastructure,
Working structure for the whole project
Heidrun mentions: my part could be: mise en scene, feel also able to be part of this (ushi)
Agnese: my part can be language, wording (in english of course, but maybe would be nice in other languages as well), promotion, dissemination

* Important to talk about how we share the work, with the world
(website) but also with the next teams of Iterators !
"the work falls onto earth and is just there."

streams, dumps, logs, or what else
who do we do that for?  a small booklet ? print on demand and free pdf ?

Agnese: An image board, maybe more for us, to post daily on it. To star from this week!
Going back to this: we may use also images or moving images as the ansers of the TTO. Anserws that appear non necessarily in the same monitor but maybe in other monitor of the exhibition.

* can we make a work that does not need a mediator, a person that explains it. ?
* now a lot of our work is ephemere: it happens and then it is gone

and are peter and reni artists in this context or is our role rather: we start it and take care of it, and have roles of mediation
for example writing protocolls
- for me this should be as you wish yourselves to be considered - being or taking the role of the artist is a personal choice

* varia
On the 2nd 3rd of june Austria is celebrating 25 years of internet and ACOnet, do we want to be part of it ?
the big celebration is in Vienna, but also Graz is taking part in the celebration.
So the question is if we think the installation can be a frame for a special moment?

Some terms used in the earlier discussions:
Pragmatic and pragmatism: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pragmatism

Manual manipulation: stuff is changed by going from hand to hand: a positive sense of manipulation

"tradurre / tradire": translator traitor

None of us will be there (apart from Reni), but maybe an occassion to invite a special group to contribute,
most of the partcipants are university departments, so the graz iterations would be a nice artistic non academic part in this.
- I would prefer not to (ushi)

* what are you reading ?
Peter: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarke%27s_three_laws
Ursula le Guin !: changing planes
*Reni: also, but then "dispossessed"
Julien: The Internet Does Not Exist  me too
Ushi: Introduction into Education, Literacy, Socialization
The circle, Dave Eggers
Pascale: Dreaming the Dark, Magic, sex & politics. (translate in french) Starhawk
La sorcellerie capitaliste, Isabelle Stengers.
L'armata dei sonnanbuli (the army of the , Wu Ming
The man in the high castle, Phiip K. Dick

The Points BELOW are the start for the MEETING of the 21st

- text

- how to go from idea to installation ?
Agnese: I think, as the TTO wont' be *working* for real but it would be a kind of Wizard of Oz, that we may want to collect materials to feed the database of TTO: images, quotes, videos, sentences, links to the web...

- visual material = fotos, grafics, ... that we can use for the website, a flyer and the press.
