Some Questions for the group discussion
1. How do the messengers Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Threema, Telegram and Signal handle encryption? What information do these messengers get per message transmission?
- Many of these apps give an option to encrypt your communication, your metat data that is going in and out -- it depends on their corporate policy - defines the mode for how they allow encryption. Whatsapp, Facebook Messanger are not really encypted.
- Asymmetric encryption & symmetric encryption. For Symmetric Encryption you need to share a secret, how to transform the message and how to undo it, you have to have met each other before, to exchange the secret.
- The Asymmetric ecryption was created, so you can start creating with a server, the process to create a seret without a trusted communication channel. If both know the secret, you can decrypt it. You change the size of the message, you don't know the size of the message.
- Observers can still see that you are communicating,
2. This is Signal's website: https://signal.org/. Can you figure out how to install it on your smartphone and/or laptop?
3. In which countries has Signal been banned? Why?
