<<Possible Bodies meets Kym Ward>>

Research triggers:

(the PB project is rather intuitive as a whole ...)

Making a comparison with how digital artefacts travel on-line, for example in the torrent protocol. From a movie, a unit of sense, gets atomized/cut to be able to be sent. The fragments travel, and are later re-assembled once all elements have been received. This paradigm is used for the body: first there is a physical body, then it gets sliced, then it gets re-composed as a virtual body. As if they are both whole, on both sides. The humanism of keeping the body as a unit of sense. Political issue of the dependence on wholeness in biomedical imaging.
for clarity, body has to be sliced for observation (suspension of judgement, when you have 1mm of human slice) - truth is reinstalled again - 'oneness'
linked to things we see happened in more general -- this transition from slicing to 3d recomposition; but this dependency on truthfulness is seat into all tools and imagery of 3d scanning, modeling and animation, it seems. Where there's a lot of work to create synthetic/virtual volumes, but every time the work -on all levels: time, computation etc.- is pushed under the surface of something that resembles real?
where truthfulness means: hyper-real
simone's proofs in court.
it seems that in that move, conventional understandings of race, gender, age, all seem to sl i p back in. (back to 19th C perspectives on relationality/positions /truth etc)
this is modernist: identifying, naming, labeling, categorisation -- 3D constructing the probable, more than the possible (or possible within a specific regime of truth)
like, for example Parisi: Alien Logic of computation or Zach Blas on the paranodal or Barad on the queerness of atoms. [ suspicious about the pyrotechnics of their writings, always placing the possible elsewhere, out of reach ] blandness of an algorhythm, or the mediocracy of interface/software

KW social-technological-powers / categorisation coming from the "wanting to know"(...)
FS everything in the digital seems to be ready for hegemonic linearity - power structure manipulation
FS saying unpopular stuff -> the digital is a pretty dreary place in its reliance of the binary, everything comes back to calculation in left-right,... so much drive towards absolute positioning even when it's very high resolution, where you can really precisely define through thousands of parameters -- people like Parisi, that are projecting potential in the space between the bits are interesting --
its a long way to seeing those Parisian :-) possibilites. Urgency is in trying to find those possible spaces within the digital, not just as a more interesting / less problematic use.

not let the possible slip away into the imaginary (only).

KW what tools do we have to be able to imagine what is going on inside us?
why do we want to know?
how to recognise we are in the monsters belly ... curiosity / understanding / science .. all charged processes
how not to problematise modern conciousness as an alien thing but as something we are practitioners of?
Why to research ... what fights are we picking? what means do we have? how do we commit to them? (not as a duty)

KW this still sounds a bit too loose, to be worried about everything about the digital points towards future statistic power use. That's already happening.
Waldby picked it immediately but the criticism goes alongside and it's loud enough in each step -- that's what i would care about. Not about taking a part and then critizicing it, but more that the criticism and the thing are hand in hand and hopefully they can inform each other?

interest in doing it, in active criticism -- learning from relearn 'read me + ' -- critical fork. inserting criticism back into the tech. Software as a critique
circluding has this as well, a teenage girls mag publishing it/on it
so question is: where does it go, how does it get active.
Action Based Research <--> software as a critique. How does critique circulate. A bugreport.

wonder about how kids (now) understand n ews bias. they know, high level of interpretation. Are there ways you critique info so that you can understand better.
Nicolas Maleve: http://sicv.activearchives.org/logbook/comparative-ways-of-seeing/
recently teamed up with Geoff Cox and they started "Machine ways of seeing"
too much of Berger mansplaining? FS dreams of being able to speak back to projects like Blender. they deserve (as in: they might need to and their project is interesting enough) to be spoke n with. But that's a bugreport on a megalevel. the possibility is maybe to cut up in smaller bugreports or work with different people, try to find different ways of making that conversation happen...

Jara: maybe not the same urgency/sense of conversing with software communities (feels like lacking language) but feels attracted to the question of Machine - learning. Thinking through learning; enlarging the ecology of agents that are constructing the world we live in -- images produced / constructed collectively -- political conditions that affect/effect 'ways of being' :-P

KW Reciprocal relationship: Involving herself into Q of technology. Setting up the observatory: different for different people involved. They are interested in setting up a space for thought without production as an end-point. 'Self-weeding involvement'. (like: a stock broker would probably not show up at Calafou). A space for thinking-through-making with as little capture as possible. KW also interested in local community. What happens if the resources get overblown by international, entitled, privileged people (if there is no application process). Trying to forge links betwene local community and the pla c e, partnerships ... make sure it is not closed. Not that it should be a community center but also that there are links to the situation the observatory is .. situated in.
Most work that is being done is on the relationship(s) of the people to the work and the space.

It would be creepy to auto-observe too much maybe? OR maybe through a mode of a phd ...  THE IDEOLOGY VS REALITY OBSTACLE. Have come up with code-words. Relation to FACT, sending people to the observatory. "indonesian photographer"

CUT
"the deeply connected way that everything is entangled with everything  else means that any act of observation mak
es a "cut" between what is  included and excluded from what is being considered. Nothing is  inherently separate from anything else, but separations are temporarily  enacted so one can examine something long enough to gain knowledge about  it. This view of knowledge provides a framework for thinking about how  culture and habits of thought can make some things visible and other  things easier to ignore or to never see. For this reason, according to  Barad, agential realism is useful for any kind of feminist analysis,  even if the connection to science is not apparent."

[would be super nice to find a direct quote from Barad on this?]
A specific intra-action (involving a specific material configuration of the “apparatus of observation”) enacts an agential cut (in contrast to the Cartesian cut—an inherent distinction—between subject and object) effecting a separation between “subject” and “object.” That is, the agential cut enacts a local resolution within the phenomenon of the inherent ontological indeterminacy. In other words, relata do not preexist relations; rather, relata- within-phenomena emerge through specific intra-actions. Crucially then, intra-actions enact agential separability—the local condition of exteriority- within-phenomena. The notion of agential separability is of fundamental importance, for in the absence of a classical ontological condition of exteriority between observer and observed it provides the condition for the possibility of objectivity.
Moreover, the agential cut enacts a local causal structure among “components” of a phenomenon in the marking of the “measuring agencies” (“effect”) by the “measured object” (“cause”). Hence, the notion of intra-actions constitutes a reworking of the traditional notion of causality.

possible focuses/angles for the conversation:

    1) on agency / agency flipping devices
    2) on biology as a center to hegemonic culture but as a periphery to feminism

It is a double-crossing:

when FS explained the VHP, kind of medieval dissecting of the body -- http://pad.constantvzw.org/p/possiblebodies.informaticbodies
movement between frozen body and slices. -- 1mm and 0.33mm tr ansferred the body directly into bits --

Each cycle required from three to 15 minutes to complete, and the  Colorado team could do about 50 each day. The work was meticulous  because, once the rasp started, there was no second chance. The tissue  came off in a frozen powder, which was collected, stored and ultimately  "cremated in a respectful manner," according to an NLM official.

The Visible Human male comprises images from 1,829 cross sections and  took nearly four months to complete. The female is made of images from  5,187 sections and took nearly 10 months. The NLM paid about $1.4  million for the work, which produced 15 gigabytes of computer code for  the male and 40 gigabytes for the female. A gigabyte is 1 billion bytes,  each of which contains eight digital units, or "bits."

> the other way round - looked at slicer then backwards to visible human. Segmentation work - fixed seperation of organs, no promiscuity
segmentation of organs is done alowwing for not promiscuity between organs, so keeps this separatedness of xix c anatomy
seems that in the way 3d works there is a need for isosurface that reinforces the xix c separation/segmentation
isosurface
tomography - current biomedial imaging techniques are often based on slicing. Slicing is a way of removing contact with body
slicing means removing the perspective and re-install it synthetically in the digital space.
the VHP is a kind of exercise that makes that physically and also digitally. -- from flattening to re-constructung volume.
thinking the body as a datascape. (VHP)

It is problematic, politically: body keeps being treated as a 'unit of sense' (or a combination of units of sense ? ). If t he accurate treatment of tissue needs slicing, they ("they" as in practitioners of western visual culture and biomedicine) go for it , but always making sure there is a re-packag ing into a body -- extreme humanism, preservation of the ONE .
human body as a unit of sense
Transition of the leaky body through processes of registration, data manipulation, without the leak - its hyper-real but without the promiscuity
in cutting the body up and then doing a lotof work to re-construct it there is a lot of work to make it a whole again
like for example the "registration" is the process of making separate images e-connected and accessible fluidly again.

the process of registration is assuming that subsequent images/slices of a body are actually 'simultaneous' but the body is different every-time
suspension of judgment; after the repackaging, the body will be whole again.

the issue of representation: these slices are treated as 'images' but they are more something like " maps " .

Catherine Waldby, The Visible Human Project: Informatic Bodies and Posthuman Medicine:
https://library.memoryoftheworld.org/b/goTzSmqtJT-khka0oobpANfVIoXzAGRzELF3icpmMFGqD4ZX

Tomographic imaging is concerned precisely to eliminate the collapsed depth of the radiographic image, to try to banish the ambiguities of transparent density from the image by making its picture plane as shallow as possible. The CT scan, for example, eliminates all information outside the 1 mm depth of the scan, so that problems of perspective are minimised and the image field conforms as closely as possible to the projective medium, the screen. In this it shares a general drive within medical modernism to eliminate depth from both its image modalities and its objects, a drive which Cartwright describes as cubist—‘a [medical] culture that reconfigures the bodily interior as an endlessly divisible series of flat surfaces and mobile networks’ (Cartwright 1995:91). At the same time, tomographic methods paradoxically reinscribe depth in the image, or more precisely infer a composite image which reproduces depth within itself. Tomographic methods image the body as a registered series of planar ‘cuts’, which can, like the VHP data, be restacked to reproduce a volumetric map.

what would an expert say about the absurdity of tomography -- the roughness of not wanting to see the body holistically, larger than how it can be 'seen' by the imaging tech.
would they recognise it as just one way of seeing the body? one technique amongst many? How are the different imagings/imaginations brought together.

Tomography as a cultural axiom.

magnetic, radiation etc are all slicers. Interesting the absolute normalisation of the re-calculation.
normalisation of recalculation after
there is computation -- seems that the instance of a body can not exist without computation. // these images -- there is no picture-taking. No medium images get projected on. In tomography the only rendering visible happens through computation.Images that can not exist without computation.

slicing and scanning

is it possible to make a diagonal mri? does that matter?

difference between circluding and agential realism -- circluding is still dialectical , it remains a flip on something that is already in existence -- it does it in a positive and a negative. Barad a more nuanced understanding?

Waldby: "Internal surgery, the instrumental address of the living body ‘s internal organs, only became possible at the point when medicine developed exscriptive imaging technologies. I am using Lippit’s (1996) term here to refer to technologies that write the living body’s interior morphology as externalised image-objects, traces or reflections projected onto screens. Exscriptive technologies are techniques for imaging the living body, a visual ‘dissection’ which does not involve an actual incision."

Barad 818 - post-humanist performativity
In summary, the universe is agential intra-activity in its becoming. The primary ontological units are not “things” but phenomena—dynamic topological reconfigurings/entanglements/relationalities/(re)articulations.
And the primary semantic units are not “words” but material-discursive practices through which boundaries are constituted. This dynamism is agency.
Just thinking about the necessity for naming other ways, to release agency. Seems as if circluding is an oldfashioned formal move: switching agencies around (what did not have agency, now has and the other way around)

but there's something interesting -and that's why we were connecting it to hyperbolic space- that there's something non-permanent about the flip. Ability of going inside-out.
FS reads it as cyborgian of this ability of being inside and outside at the same time.
that's why the BUT gate is also related. // not reading it in a binary way.

must we be careful ofnot doing this same move with the "excription" then?
tomography is making visible what is the inside to the outside - doesnt take in to account the hyperbolic, the mollecule change

1) naming / terming:
we looked a bit more carefully at http://circluding.hotglue.me/

-> opposite perspectives to physical processes (other views, alien logics, non-ocular perspectives) -- maybe you are interested in sharing a bit further about this?

from there, ne thing we thought would be super super interesting would be to focus on "agency" in a situated manner, asking you to "interpret" the item nr 28 into item 62, as a gestureof "activating" circlusion together by, to start from, turning it into a verb... but not only ;)

Circlusion http://possiblebodies.constantvzw.org/inventory/?028
Circluding http://possiblebodies.constantvzw.org/inventory/?062

-> renaming body agency to render certainbodyparts active // how some bodyparts make subjectivities emerge, and hence how their agency recognition is key for the recognition of those other subjectivities
-> ' the affliction of penetration still rules supreme over the  heteronormative imaginary and its arbitrary division of bodies into  “active” and “passive.”'
-> ...and more ;)

Now, thinking about the guidedtour you'll prepare and we'll "embody" from here (tomorrow we can invent ways), we are sending here a list of possibly related items:

and, not so evidently related but yes, because we know they are both in your path:

2) (notes from) Gut feminism

The body is not an apolitical substrate - feminist truism is: The body is a social construct (Wilson, p.26)

anatomical influence - 'anatomy' as a science is not considered in hysterical paralysis. Just a part of the body is paralysed, but this operates according to symbolic / cultural logic rather than anatomical knowledge

the biological body has been peripheral to much feminist theory

How do biological data arrest, transform, or tax the theoretical foundations of feminist theory?

Most feminist research on the body has relied on the methods of social constructionism, which explore how cultural, social, symbolic, or linguistic constraints govern and sculpt the kinds of bodies we have. These theorists tend not to be very curious about the details of empirical claims in genetics, neurophysiology, evolutionary biology, pharmacology, or biochemistry.

"condensation of viscera and mood, exemplified in the term melancholia"

"alliances of internal organs and minded states, not in relation to ancient texts but in the contemporary milieu where melancholias are organized as entanglements of affects, ideations, nerves, agitation, sociality, pills, and synaptic biochemistry."

on the general antibiologicism of feminism --

(S) eek some feminist theoretical gain in relation to how biological data can be used to think about minded and bodily states. What conceptual innovations would be possible if feminist theory wasn’t so instinctively antibiological?

questions of biology and aggression --

Placebo

the crucial political point that every treatment requires an agent that traffics across boundaries in ways that, from the beginning, have been unstable and possibly perilous. The desire for a drug uncontaminated by placebo and the desire for treatments uncontaminated by drugs strike me as politically diminished in that they hold out for a kind of purity of action. (p140)

[Kym said...] also - she looks at sandor ferenczi, who was around I think at time of Freud, and his theory of amphimixis   - this is the interdependency of organs on one another. The reason I  thought of this now, is that it connects whats happening throughout the  body, rather than seperates, and often it sounds scandalous (!) but  phantasy and intestine, for example, become directly biologically  interrelated.
