We will take a starting point Hans Christien Dany's novel - 'Morgen werde ich Idiot'. The short literary book is about how the culture of self monitoring came to be via Foucault, how cybernetics comes to be the ideological framework for data monitoring systems. Dany writes from a personalised history, he has an anecdotal mode of writing, cutting in the story of his great-grandfather being a head prison-officer, and picturing the panopticon as avantgarde surveillance system.
The Idiot of the title comes from Greek etymology - meaning private person / non-citizen / not willing to participate in the polis
>> thinking that this fits with Relearn, as it explores a distrust of rise in automization of self-monitoring
>> It would be good to have a theory element but also a practical one too.
Excessively wide interests stemming from this (!) -to be scaled back before the workshop:
1) The localisation and 'ethical use' of surveillance systems
2) Homeostasis (Oswald
?
Wiener's starting point for the bioadaptor) with performativity
3) The rhetoric of monitoring and surveillance as being primary to anti-trust discourse
Coming from a visual-arts/design perspective, we can see that not just companies, governments or the NSA understand the value of information flowing through a network. Smaller, more localised groups (esp. in the arts) have, in the last years, begun to direct interaction i.e. creating the network in order to create a resource that was previously not there. So its the creation and distribution of resources by instantiating a network, which works ALSO as a local surveillance system, and can be understood as an expression of surveillance, for sure, but also would never have been created without - because of (for e.g. HCD's) societal surveillance / network / feedback loop rhetoric.
So examples, because obv this sounds wooly -

>>Interests are in the 'Socially engaged' instantiations of the feedback-loop rhetoric, but also the tech application
