Stereotypes, problems. Do we throw in the ethics too soon? Is 'delegation' a moral approach.
Speaking of efficiency
Different cultural backgrounds; the German will 'grid' things, before breaking down. Sets of priorities change depending on the cultural context. Our understanding differs.
How do you introduce priorities?
"It would be good to divide tasks"
I was involved in a volunteer group that thought of community as counter-hegemonic approach. the most hyper individualistic = US Literary activist project. Counteract hegemonic, neoliberal upperclass dominated very male dominated. White, male, CIS == literary world. Bringing together majority female, color, trans, queer, differently abled. Realised that it is hard to make changes from inside capitalism. Resistance; internalized.
What we realized: discourses were so internalized, they overtook the project: six months long discussion about efficiency: importance of meeting face to face or google hangout as much as possible, every two weeks.
Seeing each others faces as much as possible.
Delegate tasks more efficiently: smaller groups: division
smaller groups, work in paralel.
Different aims, different versions of efficiency
Aims/visions are different in working together.
Dealing with limited energies. Product vs process. Sustainability.
We need to produce something, to be sustainable. Two positions: 1. sustainability through systemic change/ 2. personally getting enough money to do this
Life sustaining, both working towards sustainability.
Now vs. long future.
Situation where a lot has to be done: sometimes not possible to see each other: other ways maybe: wanting to bring together brings a split
How to update, "keep in touch"
different outcomes.
We are very used to syncronising face to face, synchronise ideas or exchange them.
"tuning".
Quality of communication: through group email discussions/hangouts etc. , moderated. …"User experience"? As a system it works, we can exchange, but there is always something missing.
We can exchange.
What is missing? Feeling?
How do these tools support certain types of interaction? For knowlededge exchange?
Is it possible to use them in an efficient way?
tools can influence in a good way, it is making you be more precise.
Working togethere through google docs. Someone else brought us together. 4 workshops with physical meetings. From different countries; mixed age/gender/cultures.
After meeting physically, trust. After it was easier afterward. You don't know when people will understand each other, so that is stress.
"only listen to the 5 minutes" said the manager; especially when it is men talking. On-line this is different
What crossed my mind ... no native speakers in the group! They have to become more precise, direct; less words, less ambiguity. You (need to) lose the rhetorics.
"i find things offensive, while they were not"
"an e-mail ... no immediacy. They could say one sentence."
The emotional labor tool for e-mail ... the algorithm that does the "emotional labor".
Writing is different ... "profilieren" how language and power is structured in different spaces.
There is no (a different) ritual you are used to once you communicate in a foreign language. Via email and real time, it becomes more raw. A good thing? When everyone is speaking "badly"?
deconstruct authority. needing to be understood.
If you take machines into the collective, the conversation. (Typing into keyboard, already delegation) How does technology influence the discourse? Communication base: ways of bringing us together. Hangouts i.e. How does this tool allow certain things to happen?
I does always change. Emoticons and the politeness factor. Codes change. Language
Clara: trust, public trust. Hard to reduce; can be abrubt, a contract. How to establish trust.
Mechanism in the interface.
How can we establish trust? Even through technology made to create capital? How to work on that building communities? Concerning tools?
Non-profit orientation.
Creating a "contract".Non profit orientation i.e. there is some orientation, how we use this software and so on. Organizational management field/manifesto/consensus/
If that every was an issue: Should we use that tool, should we use other tools?
It seems very embedded: do we want to be more product-focused or radical community. The method of how functioning as a group.
What was the limit? What tools were available. A practical question, if we were more product oriented,
Acces to knowledge, who had it?
Should everyone access all communication? How to manage?
Power structures ...
Would you ever not use Google structures, docs etc. Where there is no limitation etc.? Google docs linked to your account, you have to identify, put yourself in certain situations. Some activists can not afford to be on there concering their work.
Social media, to get masses involves.
Diaspora vs FB
This is now part of the landscape. We live in contradictionary times.
"putting to the plants that we don't want to water"
"For me it got so blurred, I gave up"
Example: Arab spring, not only tool for democratization, but also tool for the state who controls. For or against activism?
