Recent communication by Fabrizio Cestini on Nettime:

A quick update about the *Collective Awareness Platforms for Sustainability and
Social Innovation* (CAPS) initiative and related activities:
The *second CAPS call* received nearly 200 proposals, in areas as diverse and
emerging as open democracy, open policy making, collaborative economy,
collaborative making, collaborative consumption, environmental awareness and
action. All of them are multidisciplinary and rely on network technologies, but
each of them proves that different technological requirements may be driven by
the need for sharing and social collaboration rather than industrial
competitiveness alone. We were finally able to start negotiations of 24
projects, most of which will start on 1^st January 2016. You can find an updated
presentation of the current projects and of the next calls on the collective
awareness website _http://ec.europa.eu/digital-agenda/en/collectiveawareness_
Soon we will publish there also full details about the projects under negotiation.*Next calls* in a nutshell: ICT11 CAPS in 2017, ICT12b "*Distributed
Architectures for Decentralised Data Governance*" in 2016 (deadline 12 April
2016). Don't miss them! Workprogramme just published at http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/portal/desktop/en/funding/reference_docs.html#h2020-work-programmes-2016-17.
The European Commission has just published a few *public consultations* which
are most relevant to the social topics addressed by CAPS. Your view will be key
for us to better understand these needs (please also let us know directly if you
contribute).

  * The consultation on *Regulation of Internet platforms in view of the Digital
    Single Market strategy* _https://ec.europa.eu/eusurvey/runner/Platforms/_
explores which future internet you would like to see. Although there are 150
questions, you are no obliged to answer all of them: just pick the ones that
are of most concern and tell us what are your views on open vs proprietary
standards, open data vs big data, platform access, internet web services,
internet governance, or net neutrality. The European Commission is asking
you whether it needs to be involved in law-making  to govern the internet,
considering the role that private companies (such as Google, Facebook, Uber,
etc.) are having on issues such as privacy, transparency, copyright,
cybersecurity, or other concerns. Deadline to contribute: 16 December 2015

  * The consultation on *Standards for the Digital Single Market*
    _https://ec.europa.eu/digital-agenda/en/news/have-your-say-standards-help-achieve-digital-single-market_
is gathering views on priorities for standards in key technology areas which
are critical to achieving the DSM. This might as well include emerging areas
such as those covered by the forthcoming call on "distributed architectures
for decentralised data management", in order to facilitate the take-up of
Open Data strategies, e.g. for the Sharing Economy.
