P R O G R A M

GenderBlending gathers body hackers, 3D theorists, game activists, queer designers and software feminists around the table to challenge typical digital representations of the body, bending the rules of both gender and software. Using 3D animation software Blender, medical bodyscanners and 3D-printers, we’ll experiment at the contact zones of gender and  technology.

Starting from the theoretical and material specifics of gender representations in a digital context, GenderBlending is an opportunity to develop prototypes for modelling digital bodies differently. More specifically, it allows us to look at the way software conditions social readings and imaginations of gender. We’ll primarily use Free, Libre and Open Source software such as MakeHuman, Blender, Openscad, Freecad and PyMol. Especially when it comes to matters of the body, we would like to focus on tools that invite us to speak back to their social and technological construction.

The week starts with an inventory of possible approaches to GenderBlending through the lenses of three related but distinct technologies. Each of them comes with their own politics, problems and possibilities:

Following the projects that participants would like to develop within the framework of the six day session, we'll form workgroups. Our goal is to prototype ideas together, rather than to produce dazzling results. As none of us covers the whole spectrum of technologies, practices and theories involved in GenderBlending, it is important that we group in ways that allow us to exchange skills and knowledge.
To support our work, we have invited several 'experts' that can help; we created a Public Archive for reference and also organised two public events that provide input and inspiration. Throughout the week, discussions, presentations and other types of exchange will be mixed with small workshops and collaborative work.
On Saturday afternoon, we'll present our findings to each other and a small group of invited guests.

We have a 3D-printer [Ulti-maker], 3D scanners [type/make?], projectors and some Linux computers available (limited availability). Also, we are collaborating with HSBXL and local Fablabs for additional production facilities, if necessary.

Start with clarfying availabilities, what you can do

What would be your ideal outcome, what would be a desired process?

Anne: I am interested in articulations between queerness and technologies, how do you occupy virtual space with your gender
Seeing if the representations produces by our tools have anything to do with queerness?
Can this trigger any desire to change, question those spaces ... some kind of soft guerilla?
Afraid that we're eaten by technology
Wants to join a project.

Wendy: I am interested in different technologies to meet; on their own they are too one dimensional for me. To question the 'directiveness' of those tools, to see if there is a way for those to be less reductive; to break their power to constrain.
Prefers to join a project.

Freyja: I love 3D printing, and I love law. So when we translate between physical space and 3D virtual space, both come into play. So basically I want to play, but most of all I want to become more aware ... have the confidence for making these ideas tangible.
Afraid that technology will keep us from thinking
Afraid that nobody wants to print as well!
Wants to reflect on what she is herself working on

Femke:
Afraid that our lack of tech skills will keep us from making
Wants to work on MakeHuman interface

Zeljko: Work on kickertable?

NOTES FROM NUCLEUS

The body as source
recognisable bodies portraits bio-data available online for re-use
3D-files  become available to others, often on basis of phoptography - seems easy  to go from picture to 3D printing, but it is not
* medical uses
* representation in repositories
* representation in gaming
only human bodies? server can have a gender also, plants have gender -> how to phrase it to make sure it is about 'gender'

For reference:

Wendy: 'A bit embarassing to be the only women in there, printing naked bodies in a school with male engineers around'
ingineers use them for models of gears...
material: bioplastic, normal plastic, would like to work with
this is layer printer, imal has a powder printer (with UV light)
how do we hack it? difficult, is what the session is for, from fantasies of bodies we have
-> ask Phil & ask him for a file, ham sliced humans, create stackable bodies
-> Claude, 3D printing of neolitthical bodies in natural Science Museum, visiting him?
used in archeology to reconstruct from skull, for the police... using parameters
-> Make Human uses categories, measurements... that remind us of first colonial annotations

deconstructing, deforming (your own) body
positions that hide gender, cliché gestures, actions, figures (king)
-> find gender-aware OS 3D-animator? preferrable in Brussels ;-)

experience to deal with for next one: inviting people quickly, leaves only one slot open now
->  effect of working with big institutions, they needed names already in  March (trying to avoid to link them to dates), also becaus eof tight  budget
-> names can also attract participants

Gender Blending (werktitel)
Modelling bodies / Transformative objects / Alternatieve lichaamsvoorstellingen

(First Tekst sent to Beursschouwburg):

Duur: 17-22 november 2014

From Femke's girls and cars text:
Hanging   on to stereotypical representations of desire like cars and girls is   boring and limits the playground of F/LOSS to the constraints of   proprietary, mysoginistic values. A more ambitious approach would be to   ask for images that experiment with diverse realities, bending the  rules  of both gender and software. (...) F/LOSS  is playing its part in  constructing alternative imaginaries of how  people might relate to  technology. The potential of these shared and  participative software  projects lies in negotiating new visions and  utopias based on the  powerful idea that we not only consume but also  construct our coded  environment.

La   technologie du genre - figurine more than video game. Needs some   Blender part. Interested in translation/connection to physical. Boring   3d printing :-) Makerbot, reprap ... Parameters, normalisation. How   gendered bodies are imagined through digital technologies.
